26.6.2023 In sports, it is really easy for people to focus on results and achievements and to forget there is a person inside that triple axel or Hail Mary pass…myself included. In my career, I did very well, better than most people could ever dream of, but I never did the things I thought mattered most in my whole sporting life…I never won an Olympic medal or a world title but have been saying “thank you” for many years when anyone mistakenly congratulates me for my “Olympic Gold”. I’ve watched as champions have been celebrated on the ice for years, revered as demi-Gods for this or that and I harshly admitted to myself that I would never be on their level and that I should be be happy skating a supporting role in whatever show I was cast. Despite what I may look like from the outside, the clothes, the hair, the “sass”, I am very particular about how my life is run and cultivated for me, not for attention. I don’t impose my oddities on others. I like to be kind, and humble and work hard and be part of a team and to love people in excess. I always thought I’d quietly leave performing, gracefully with some happy memories and a farewell wave from my friends. I never dreamt in a million years I’d be the kind of someone that would have the kind of send-off I did yesterday. People standing and crying all over the world, an arena filled with tears, hugs and love and happiness and appreciation and more tears…I felt like the champion I’d set out to be and that my moment of glory came for me. The moral of this little story which will take me many years to process, is…be kind to yourself and others. Love with your whole heart. Never apologize for or be ashamed of being yourself. Keep your nose up with pride but your head down in pursuit of being your best self. The world will surprise you one day, when you deserve it, and you will be forever changed. To everyone who got me to yesterday and was a part of my final moment in the spotlight, I am so humbled and crying again. Dear young self, It’s 25 June 2023, we’re 38 years old and today we will give the final performance of our career. We have spent 26 years on the ice. We competed for 15 years, went to two Olympic Games, won a bunch of medals and were applauded all over the world. Our professional career was over a decade long and we were very lucky to entertain people in a rapidly changing world where telephones (can you believe it!?) rule people’s lives. Some advice… •Skating will come easily to you but don’t be lazy. •When you’re young, you’re going to uproot your whole family and watch them suffer the burdens that grown-ups feel, because of you. Know that when it’s all over, they’ll say, “we would do it all again.” •A bunch of powerful people will offer you the future you dream about but only if you do things their way. They are bullshit. •You’re going to be a monster at times but you’re only hurting yourself. •You are going to have to be strong enough to prove people wrong. •You will feel inferior often, through all of it, and sometimes you’ll choose avoidance and other times you’ll build a brick wall of diva to feel protected. Don’t be afraid of people and don’t compare yourself to them. •It will take you time to be at peace with your regrets and while you tell everyone you have few, they will be many. •Never overlook how truly lucky you are. These souvenirs from the road less travelled are daunting, but now a few things you can be sure of. The ice will make you who you are, in your blood and your heart. This adventure will open your mind and soul to the great big world around you and will teach you the value of kindness, humility and gratitude. Your journey, on its last day, will fill you with so much pride you can’t hold back the tears. When it all comes to a close, with the last notes of Clair de Lune reverberating through an arena on the other side of the world, you’ll be at center ice when the spotlights go out on you for the final time, thinking about the little kid, skating on a frozen cornfield all those years ago & wishing you could tell him that dreams come true. Thank you to everyone involved in making it so special, especially my skating family, all the fans who lit up the rink, friends and strangers from all over the world for writing me and making me cry every day, and to my family at home for giving me the strange and beautiful life I’ve led on the ice. Last year, I watched friends of mine, @kapanna87 & @luca.lanotte_skater give their final performances, and quietly at the end of the show, Luca grabbed Anna by the shoulders, skated her around and had her look out into the audience to remember what this life looks and feels like. It made me cry then and makes me cry now when I think about it and that quiet moment that spoke volumes, showed me what would be important on my final day. Grazie Anna & Luca.
