Lily Gladstone Instagram – It is striking that on this day, which in 1994 was declared International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by the United Nations, the sixth IPCC Climate Report was released. Been turning that over in my mind and spirit all day. So grateful that the leaders, healers, artists and warriors over at @ndncollective knew what to say.

✨ In this moment, we must dream the Indigenous dream✨
Today, on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest #ClimateReport.
“This report from the IPCC is the new gold-standard update to climate science, its first in eight years. And these statements, taken together, are the clearest statement of how dire the climate emergency has become,” says writer and ally Eric Holthaus.
For decades, like testimonies from our Indigenous communities and leaders, these reports have been critical in understanding the impacts, threat, and the “why” of climate change and global warming. Yet, decade after decade both the climate scientific community, their research, and our Indigenous communities have been ignored.
Given what is in this report and what we are seeing in our communities, this trend of ignoring climate science and data and ignoring Indigenous climate leadership by our elected leaders must end across the globe.
Whether it be #COP26 where the international community makes decisions about reducing emissions, whether its local climate task forces that exist on the city or state level, or whether its entire governments, we need to acknowledge the climate emergency we are in, implement rapid greenhouse emissions reductions, end oil and gas subsidies, extraction on or near Indigenous lands, and invest in Indigenous led climate solutions.
The 2021 IPCC #climatereport says the widespread and severe effects of climate change are here and its going to get a lot worse before it gets good. A new social contract must combat exclusion and marginalization and place Indigenous solutions and voices at the forefront of the fight against the existential threat of climate change. | Posted on 10/Aug/2021 09:17:24
