Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram – A few pictures from my performance in Tallinn two weeks ago. Many years ago, when I was about 12 years old, I was attending a workshop with CVC mama. Workshops left huge impressions on me at that age and it impacted my practice. A few words made a big difference to me. No repetition or continuous correction was necessary. I was so hungry to learn that I latched onto every word that was said by any teacher. I would analyse repeatedly and try to implement whatever was spoken. He said “there are no bad photos, only bad dancers. Whenever a photograph is taken, even if it is mid movement, it must look coherent” it may seem like such a simple thing to say. But it made so much sense to me that I began to think of transitions and weight shifts and how my arms moved for so many many years afterwards. I can’t actually say that I’m happy with every photograph even now, but there’s definitely been a lot of progress because of this analysis. It’s important as students of dance to remember that a teacher is a guide, and the work must be done by you at the end of the day. Also, no learning is too small.
