This is the face of 53 – which I turned today. But 53 years ago, my selfish streak started when I committed the crime of being born on my brother Don’s birthday. For his first three years, Donald enjoyed his own birthday, and all the inherent attention that comes with it. Then, like the dawning of a dark age came the annus horribilis of 1970, when for my brother’s 4th birthday, he received the gift of an attention hogging time terrorist, who took up permanent residence on his special day, absorbing it as his own. And ever since then, Don has had to share the only gift nobody can ever take away from you with an insatiable black hole of a brother who sucks away all the attention. So Happy Birthday not to me, but to my beloved brother Donald, my favorite audience member, who made me realize I was funny in the first place and instilled in me the only class I’ve ever exhibited; whose sense of humor and musical taste influenced my own; whose Wacky Packages I stole and who gave me my first Mad Magazines; who always augmented my meager finances during my late teens and early 20’s. Thank you, my only brother, for graciously sharing your birthday with me for over half a century, and for being a role model I’m still trying to match. I love you to death, Don! #KevinSmith #birthday

Happy Birthday to my one and only sister, @virginia_in_vienna – who first introduced the concept of creative writing to me, thus damning the world to decades of my Askewniverse nonsense.
As your standard issue younger brother, I was always snooping around Virginia’s room – and one afternoon, while on an investigative crusade, I found a notebook emblazoned with the title “The Secrets Beyond the Cellar Door.” When I demanded to know what this was all about, Virginia explained that she was writing a book with her friend about an imagined adventure.
“You can’t do that,” I opined. “You gotta ask the government first!”
My patient sister inquired “Why do you think that?”
I explained that our @moncolibrary cards had official state seals, with the implication being books required permissions from higher authorities.
Virginia disabused me of this naive notion when she revealed “You never have to ask anybody for permission to write something, because writing is all about the freedom of expression. If you wanna write, you can just write. Anything you want.”
This tacit permission to embrace imagination altered the course of my life and helped to turn me into an artist. It opened up the world to me, so I’ll always feel a debt of gratitude to Virginia for putting me on a path with advice I still heed today: if I wanna write, I don’t wait for someone to grant me permission – I just start stringing sentences together on a blank page until I’m somewhere i wanna be.
Thanks, Gah-Gee-Ah (which is how I used to say Virginia’s name when I was a toddler) for some of the best advice I ever got in my life. I love you, Sis! #KevinSmith #virginiasheridan

DOGMA: THE LOST SCENE!
A moment that never made even the first cut of my fourth film featured Bethany (played by the always amazing #lindafiorentino ) and Silent Bob facing off against the Golgothan Shit Demon at the hospital where God was trapped inside the John Doe Jersey body. In this omitted beat, Bethany gives a scared Silent Bob a Star Wars-ian kiss for good luck and tells him to stall NoMan (I’ve included that section of the script so you can see how it all played out). The moment would’ve been lost forever were it not for the @darren_michaels_photographic on-set stills that have perfectly preserved for posterity the first filmic kiss of Silent Bob! Instead, Bob’s first on-screen kiss was with Suzanne the Orangutan in @jayandsilentbob Strike Back. His first human kiss was with the manager of the @moobyspopup played by @jenschwalbach in #jayandsilentbobreboot. But had I been a more merciful editor, Silent Bob would’ve faced his first seduction with the star of #thelastseduction in #Dogma.
Speaking of Dogma…
When we had to move Saturday’s @smodcastlecinemas showing of @tuskthemovie with @justinlong to September 17, we know we let some folks down. So to make up for the scheduling change, we just added a screening of DOGMA to that slot instead! Come see my 1999 film with me on the big screen, followed by a Q&A – all for the low, low price of $15! Tickets available NOW at the #smodcastlecinemas link in my bio or at SmodcastleCinemas dot com!
