We are currently shattering heat records all over the world. Last week we experienced the hottest days ever recorded, many days in a row. At the same time, we are experiencing record high sea level temperatures and record low ice levels. This is an emergency. #FridaysForFuture Week 254. When you travel without flying, you often find yourself stuck on trains nonstop for several days. Today is one of those days, which means that the Friday strike this week will be from a train. #FridaysForFuture #ClimateStrike When the emissions of CO2 are still on the rise during an escalating climate emergency, rich countries like the UK and Norway cannot even be considering opening up any more fossil fuel projects. Meanwhile, oil & gas companies are making record-breaking profits by causing record-breaking temperatures across the world. A massive oil field like Rosebank is simply a slap in the face to the millions already suffering the consequences of the climate crisis. Adding new reserves, like Rosebank, will push us closer to passing potential tipping points beyond human control. It would blow through our already flawed climate targets. You can help #StopRosebank. Go to @stopcambo to find out more and get involved in the campaign. @gretathunberg @frias_daphne @toritsui_ @domipalmer @laurenthesunflower London, United Kingdom Week 260. #FridaysForFuture #climatestrike Week 257. #FridaysForFuture #climatestrike Week 259. #FridaysForFuture #climatestrike *share this* As authors and chairs, we staged a walk-out from my Edinburgh book festival half way through the event because it is unacceptable that their lead sponsor funds climate breakdown. Investment firm Baillie Gifford – lead sponsor of the festival and many other cultural festivals – has £5billion invested in companies who make money from fossil fuels. In response to criticism, the book festival have said that Baillie Gifford aren’t that bad, are working in the right direction and that as this £5billion only amounts to 2% of their portfolio, they’re doing alright. This is greenwashing in action. £5billion is a LOT. This is why companies causing – or financing and thereby enabling others to expand – the climate crisis should not be allowed to sponsor cultural events *until they completely divest*. Alongside 100 other authors who have signed our open statement (see last post), we call on Baillie Gifford to divest their £5billion invested in fossil fuel companies. If they do not do that, we call on @edbookfest to drop BG as a sponsor. If they do not do that, we have all pledged to boycott the festival next year. I was so excited to be invited to speak on my book at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and would have loved to have had a full conversation there. But, we are in a dire situation with the climate crisis. Emissions are *still* rising every year. The UN and the IEA have been so clear: we can have no new fossil fuels if we want a liveable future. The industry and the many governments around the world (including the UK) are still ramping up production. So, we need to cut off the fossil fuel industry’s air: we need to cut off their money. Without it, they can’t continue to enact cultural and physical extermination of communities all over the world. There is power in action. There is power in making a stand. We have both everything to lose if we decide to sit back and just watch AND everything to gain for a transformed and better world if we decide to stand up, join others and take action. Thank you to everyone who stood by us today – let this be the beginning and not the end ✊🏽 don’t just watch us, join us: more actions linked in bio! Edinburgh, United Kingdom A historic referendum is taking place in Ecuador on August 20th. It presents a unique opportunity to protect Yasuní, the most biodiverse place on earth. It’s a critically important region for the health of the Amazon basin and for the planet as a whole. This is what real climate action looks like! This referendum shows that when politicians and decision makers do not act, PEOPLE DO! Yo Apoyo #SíAlYasuní Produced by @Mullu.Tv & @jovenes_amazonicos_ec in collaboration with the Waorani Nationality of Ecuador & Okienani Waorani Association of Orellana Follow @sialyasuni for more information Climate strike week 255. Next Wednesday, the European Parliament will vote on the Nature Restoration Law. We demand MEPs to not reject this law and to vote for the strongest law possible. Nature is our ally, and our life support. We cannot afford to continue sacrifice it in the name of extraction, greed and profits. #ClimateStrike #RestoreNature #StopExpansionStartRestoration Parliament House, Stockholm Week 258. Today I joined climate activists from @stopcambo to demand the UK and Norway to #StopRosebank. If approved, extracted and burned, this one oil field would produce more CO2 than 28 countries in the Global South do in a year. Global leaders have been told time and time again that we can’t have any more new oil and gas if we want to limit global warming to 1,5°C. Yet the UK and Norwegian state-owned oil giant @equinor want to push through this disaster. @Equinor made record-breaking profits last year by causing record-breaking temperatures across the world. And it would get billions in tax breaks to open this disastrous field. Even though it would do nothing to lower energy bills or energy security. For a safe climate and affordable energy, rich countries like the UK must stop expanding oil and gas production. The first step is to #StopRosebank. You can help. Go to @stopcambo to find out more and get involved in the campaign. 📸: @protests_photos London, United Kingdom Week 258.
