Nathalie Kelley Instagram – This 20th of August, the people of Ecuador will have a historic opportunity to decide the fate of the most biodiverse place on Earth, the Yasuní National Park. It also happens to be home to many indigenous groups, including the Tagaeri and Taromenane – who are still living in voluntarily isolation. These are some of the last “uncontacted” peoples in the world, by choice! They have decided not to come and live in our world. They still know what it’s like to to eat only what they hunt and drink from clean rivers. The proposed oil drilling being voted on in this referendum would come within 0.5 km of the intangible zone that they inhabit. Plus oil companies in Ecuadors have a terrible record of oil spills and toxic dumping (some of the worst in the world) and their promise of bringing resources to a country in need are false. They have been drilling for 50 years and the people have yet to see any of that wealth. Oil does not make a country rich. Biodiversity does. And unlike oil, biodiversity cannot be replaced or substituted. Once it’s gone a place like Yasuní would take thousands if not millions of years to recover. Ecuador, you have an opportunity now to be an inspiration to the whole world…. #síalyasuní 🌲Thank you @jovenes_amazonicos_ec @mullu.tv @helenagualinga @ninagualinga @alexis_grefa for your incredible work on this campaign. 🙏🏽
