This 20th of August, the people of Ecuador will have a historic opportunity to decide the fate of the most biodiverse place on Earth, the Yasuní National Park. It also happens to be home to many indigenous groups, including the Tagaeri and Taromenane – who are still living in voluntarily isolation. These are some of the last “uncontacted” peoples in the world, by choice! They have decided not to come and live in our world. They still know what it’s like to to eat only what they hunt and drink from clean rivers. The proposed oil drilling being voted on in this referendum would come within 0.5 km of the intangible zone that they inhabit. Plus oil companies in Ecuadors have a terrible record of oil spills and toxic dumping (some of the worst in the world) and their promise of bringing resources to a country in need are false. They have been drilling for 50 years and the people have yet to see any of that wealth. Oil does not make a country rich. Biodiversity does. And unlike oil, biodiversity cannot be replaced or substituted. Once it’s gone a place like Yasuní would take thousands if not millions of years to recover. Did you know that global supermarkets are complicit in the destruction of one of South America’s most important biomes, the Cerrado? Most consumers are unaware that the meat and dairy products they buy from supermarket chains are linked to the destruction of the Cerrado.
The cheap meat and dairy stacked high on supermarket shelves, comes with a high environmental cost. How many of us are aware that these products come from animals reared in factory farms? And that they are given feed made from Brazilian soy – sourced from farms that have been directly linked to fires and deforestation in the Cerrado?
Where does the responsibility lie? It’s time to hold these supermarkets and companies accountable for bombarding us with cheap meat and other animal products – making it difficult for many of us to buy alternatives.
We need the Cerrado as much as the Amazon to cool our rapidly warming world. @standmighty is pushing for stronger legal protections for this biome and for supermarkets to CUT ties with suppliers linked to the destruction of nature.
No trees ➡️ no deep roots ➡️ no water retention ➡️ droughts floods
Please don’t make mistake our exuberance in these videos for happiness about the terrible toll that this strike is having on hundreds of thousands of people. What you are seeing in these videos is a collective feeling of solidarity among the creative people that tell your favorite stories – knowing that our demands are just and that we are on the right side of history. This fight, centered mostly over the issues of labor/wage fairness and AI – is a microcosm of what is happening in industries around the world. Corporations and the executives running them are getting richer while employees bare the burden of cost cutting. Meanwhile jobs are being lost to AI in every sector. They told us that AI would only do the jobs we DIDNT want to do! And now we are witnessing the rise of Generative AI – fed on our creative work without compensation – coming for the work we held most sacred: our human creativity. Story-telling is what makes us human, our stories and myths have always guided us as a species. If we give over this birthright to computer generated content dictated by a soulless algorithm now – that cannot bode well for the future of our species. We have already seen the kind junk television the algorithm has dictated we should watch.. This is a critical time in our Earths history, now more than ever we need to reconnect to our humanity to come together and get out of this mess. This is not the time to hand over the reins of our creativity to machines or corporations.
