We met up with actor and activist @natkelley in Egypt last week to uncover the truth about greenwashing at COP27.

Logos were everywhere in the Blue Zone, hinting at what’s happening behind the scenes: corporations have far too much influence in climate negotiations.

But, we can’t let them co-opt the movement. Instead, we need to hold them accountable and we must amplify climate justice advocates, youth activists and indigenous voices.

Nathalie Kelley Instagram - 🔥🛢️ The young plaintiffs filing a lawsuit in the #MecherosCase publicly challenge the Ecuadorian Minister of Energy and Mines! 🌍🌿

🌍🌳 In 2021, after years of struggle, nine girls won a historic ruling ordering the phasing out of all oil industry gas flares in Ecuador. However, just one year away from the final compliance deadline, NOTHING HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED! The organization representing those affected, @udapt_oficial, as well as the plaintiffs and their communities, are denouncing the serious impacts on human health and biodiversity, with several of the plaintiffs’ family members suffering from cancer. In provinces such as #Orellana and #Sucumbíos, the incidence of this disease far exceeds the national average and largely affects women. In addition, gas flares are responsible for economic losses of up to $500 million per year in the country.

✊🏾🪧 On Wednesday #February21, four of the plaintiffs confronted the 🇪🇨 Minister of Energy and Mines, @andreaarrobopena, during the Biodiversity Commission’s second session in Ecuador’s Congress. Despite the Minister’s claims of having extinguished two flares, @udapt_oficial and the “Eliminate the Flares” Collective report that, not only has the sentence NOT been complied with, but that the number of gas flares actually increased between 2022 and 2024 from 447 to 486.

When we lived in land based cultures, speaking our diverse languages, developing sophisticated local food systems that promoted biodiversity- our human and planetary health was in much better shape. The move in the last 500 years to destroy these local food systems in favor of monocultures for export, was designed by corporations to make a few people unimaginably wealthy - while people and planet suffer. Reclaiming and restoring our local food systems is imperative to restoring balance on Earth.

In just over 100 years, the ancient Big Scrub — once the largest subtropical rainforest in Australia and part of an ancient Gondwana ecosystem — was almost entirely cleared for timber, dairy, and cattle. It was a devastating loss of biodiversity, habitat, and living systems which had been stewarded by the Bundalung (Widjabul Wia-bal) people for millennia.

Restoring this ecosystem is no small task.
It takes decades, enormous devotion and most importantly COMMUNITY!

And that’s what soilmates are for 💚

This Valentine’s weekend, 15 incredible humans are joining us for @theembodiedecology on Bundjalung Country to begin the replanting process — learning regenerative skills, building food sovereignty, and remembering how to live in right relationship with land.

We will be planting trees, sharing meals, swimming in crisp freshwater creeks, and nourishing ourselves with some of the best organic food in the country by @sage.eventsbyronbay

🇪🇨 In the Ecuadorian Amazon there are 447 gas flares burning day and night in territories inhabited by indigenous and peasant communities, irremediably contaminating the environment and putting the health of thousands of people at serious risk.
🔥 Gas flares are devices used by oil companies to burn gasses derived from oil exploitation, such as carbon monoxide, which causes heart damage, carbon dioxide, which contributes to the greenhouse effect, butane, which is potentially lethal for children, and methane, which causes skin cancer.
☢️ In addition, gas flares cause acid rain, which translates into contamination of rivers, soil impoverishment, death of insects and microorganisms, diseases of plants and large vertebrates, and other imbalances in the ecosystem.
✊ In 2021, 9 girls won a ruling against the Ecuadorian state to extinguish all lighters near population centers. However, to this day the Ecuadorian state has not complied with the sentence, continuing to be complicit in this violation of human rights and the rights of nature and putting the interests of big business before the health of citizens.
⚡️ For the state to allow gas flaring is even more outrageous now, considering that the country is forced to impose planned blackouts in its major cities to face an energetic crisis while the same gas companies burn could be used as a source of energy.
🌎 The fight against lighters is not only a struggle of the Amazonian peoples, but of all of us, as they contribute substantially to global warming, and therefore to climate change.

Nathalie Kelley - 85.4K Likes - In the 10 years I’ve been on Instagram I have used my sexuality to grab attention, for my own validation and for various other reasons that I later came to to regret. But I’ve meditated deeply on sharing this video of my naked breasts - and I feel justified in sharing this private moment with the world - if it serves to bring attention to the issues I believe are urgent. It’s now clear to me, beyond any doubt, that @meta’s algorithm is actively suppressing my content regarding the levels of deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado by multinational companies like @cargill @proudtobebunge. My stories with wonderful journalists and ngos such as @sumaumajournalism @stand.earth @standmighty about the fires raging across these biomes are also being deprioritized.
While I’m well aware of the multiple crisis unfolding in the world that demand our attention, I feel compelled to speak up on behalf of indigenous women especially (like the Kayapó woman who painted my breasts in the design of a turtle, according to their tradition) who are on the frontlines of this violence. This is clickbait that begs you to dig deeper… to follow the money and see that many of those profiting from the destruction of some of the most biodiverse regions in the world, are at this moment flying to COP in Dubai, eager to portray themselves as the “heroes” in this story. But those who live here would tell you stories of rivers and bodies poisoned with the very agro chemicals they are selling us. Any promises they might make about deforestation need to be backed up with promises of restoring the biodiversity they have destroyed. If you pick up this story make sure you also talk about the tragic loss of species like the jaguar, of which only 300 Remain in the Cerrado - to make way for monocultures of soy used to feed industrially farmed animals in Europe, China and the US… may my naked breasts serve as an act of resistance against an algorithm actively suppressing stories that are trying to bring these urgent stories to the worlds attention. 🙏🏽

Logos were everywhere in the Blue Zone, hinting at what’s happening behind the scenes: corporations have far too much influence in climate negotiations. But, we can’t let them co-opt the movement. Instead, we need to hold them accountable and we must amplify climate justice advocates, youth activists and indigenous voices. Nathalie Kelley - 29.9K Likes - Today I found myself explaining who Jesus was to my beloved - recalling stories from my days in Sunday School and sermons by my Tío Carlos who is a pastor in Argentina. And I was struck by my description of this figure who has been so misunderstood and exploited by organized religion. Jesus was an anti-establishment Jewish man, deeply critical of the wealthy and those who exploited religion to make money. He was UNEQUIVOCALLY committed to Non-Violence, hence his title The Prince of Peace. 🕊️His command to “turn the other cheek to those who would harm us” is still the hardest most profound spiritual lesson for me to wrap my head around and I will most likely spend my whole life trying to understand it let alone put it into practice. Today in Bethlehem Christmas is cancelled because the endless cycles violence and retaliation fueled by trauma know no end… that is why Jesus’s words are more pertinent than ever today: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” Praying for PEACE to reign in our hearts and across all nations. 🕊️ This photo is not connected to my caption but this algorithm loves to punish any post that is profound. So I’ll add this to my prayer too… May our algorithms also be attuned to principles of PEACE over division 🕊️ And lastly thank you to Jesus for your teachings of radical love and compassion. We must demand transparency of the wages and working conditions of the people who make our clothes. Without it, we cannot demand accountability.
