This has not been an easy thing to do, and I’ll be honest it has at times been overwhelming. This portrait and subsequent exhibition is in recognition of the unrecognized, my Grandparents and ancestors before them who until now had no place in this house and have remained invisible. Our hope is that those who visit Harewood House will stop at this picture and ask themselves why it’s there? Only then will they understand that behind the fine paintings and magnificence lies a dark history, one often buried and unspoken of. It’s an uncomfortable history, with a living, breathing legacy. My thanks to Lord and Lady Harewood for engaging so openly with me over these past few years and having the courage to do so.
