Why Don’t You is 50 years old today! My first job in television. The first scripts I ever wrote. Taught me everything, so much fun, and it moved me to Manchester, which changed my life ♥️ Pic 1, Liverpool Gang; me with Lesley & Phil, behind me, the WDY Sheep! And that must be Stan Royle. Pic 2: Cardiff Gang: David Evans, who gave me that job, star of the show Benjamin Rory Slade, and Mags the AFM. Genuinely happy days. The programme’s full title is Why Don’t You Just Switch Off Your Television Set And Go Out And Do Something Less Boring Instead? Hah! ♥️ BBC One

An amazing vigil tonight, to mark the end of Manchester Pride. A beautiful night. Honoured to stand for @georgehousetrust and to remember those we have lost to AIDS, and all those fallen in the many battles we face. And the battles to come 🌈♥️ Canal Street, Manchester

This is so excellent. Heartbreaking, terrifying, shocking, and yet written by the writer’s writer, @malarkeyphelps, at the absolute height of her powers, so it’s profoundly kind and caring and wise. And a testament to the quiet, passionate diligence that brought Ben Field down. Peter and Ann suffered so much, but this finally brings them a sense of being loved. World class TV. The best. @bbc @bbcone @bbciplayer BBC One

Early 60s: Elizabeth Zott is a chemist at the Hastings Research Institute… but when she’s demeaned, plagiarised and sacked, she accidentally becomes the host of a TV cookery show. And her fight back begins! This is enormous fun. Elizabeth is a wonderful character – and the women around her, best friend Harriet, daughter Mad, and the splendid Miss Frask. The cookery shows are the most dazzling writing, combining food, feminism and the chemical constituents of a pie crust. A lovely, clever, angry read. ‘“Chemistry is change, and change is the core of your belief system. Which is good because that’s what we need more of – people who refuse to accept the status quo, who aren’t afraid to take on the unacceptable.”’

In conversation with Jonathan Harvey for the 30th anniversary production of Beautiful Thing. Literally the @heartstopper of its day. Go to @stratford_east and follow the link in the bio to hear us two pontificating! Oh the gossip that was cut! I adore @jojeharvey, he is brilliant and kind and a lion of the community ♥️ Beautiful thing
THIS is AMAZING. Cruise, at HOME, Manchester, a few tickets left (very few!). Written & acted by @1jackholden, it’s a story of gay men in the 80s. Hilarious, heartbreaking, wild, brutal, tender, joyous… one of the best nights in the theatre I’ve ever had. Immaculate writing, right down to the very last word. And quite apart from the big issues, it’s the best portrayal of CLUBBING I have ever seen. Oh my God, it GETS it! Absolutely wonderful. All hail Jack. @homemcr ♥️ HOME Mcr
1926, society is running wild after the war, and Soho is ruled by the formidable Nellie Coker. But the police are moving in… I love Kate Atkinson, and this is a glorious, sprawling romp, delighting in coincidence – vital characters literally bump into each other in the street! There’s a cold, hard tick of justice underneath the fun, with working class girls going missing. The real majesty of this is the final 20 pages where the omniscient narrator reveals their hand. Like the ending of God in Ruins, it’s brutal, funny, ruthless and so bloody cheeky. Wonderful!
