Laura Bush Instagram – On this #InternationalWomensDay, I’m grateful for courageous women leaders like my friend Tatu Msangi, a single mother who learned she was HIV-positive during pregnancy and enrolled in a program to prevent mother-to-child transmission. After delivering a beautiful, healthy daughter named Faith, Tatu went to work as a nurse at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, which received @PEPFAR funding through @egpaf. Fifteen years later, Tatu is still nursing and gives back by helping other women navigate diagnosis and treatment so that they can care for their families, contribute to their communities, and pursue their dreams.
Faith, who was 2 when President Bush and I first met her, is now in her last year of high school. She’s taking placement exams for college and wants to pursue a career in interior design.
We were happy to see Faith and Tatu recently when @thebushcenter marked the 20th anniversary of PEPFAR. Thanks to PEPFAR, 25 million lives have been saved, and 5.5 million babies like Faith have been born HIV-free in the last two decades. This #WomensDay, we celebrate the hope and opportunity PEPFAR has given to strong women and girls, like Faith and Tatu, around the world. We must all continue to support PEPFAR as we fight to end AIDS as a public health threat.
