We are especially sad for Afghan women and girls, who are enduring terrible hardship under the brutal Taliban regime. Just this week, all Afghan women were banned from studying at university. Many were turned away from their jobs in schools; others were prevented from worshiping in mosques and seminaries. And in the latest assault on human rights in the country, we fear for young girls being barred from school entirely. Treating women as second-class citizens, depriving them of their universal human rights, and denying them the opportunity to better themselves and their communities should generate outrage among all of us. For Afghans who were forced to flee their homes, these attacks remind us of our responsibility to help those who’ve helped us over the last two decades, including the evacuees here in the United States. Afghans, like people around the world, simply want to live in freedom and provide a better future for their children. Laura and I, along with the team at the Bush Center, pray that 2023 will bring a better time for the people of Afghanistan and those fighting for freedom everywhere.” “As 2022 comes to a close, our hearts are heavy for the people of Afghanistan. Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️ On this #InternationalWomensDay, I’m grateful for courageous women leaders like my friend Tatu Msangi, a single mother who learned she was HIV-positive during pregnancy and enrolled in a program to prevent mother-to-child transmission. After delivering a beautiful, healthy daughter named Faith, Tatu went to work as a nurse at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, which received @PEPFAR funding through @egpaf. Fifteen years later, Tatu is still nursing and gives back by helping other women navigate diagnosis and treatment so that they can care for their families, contribute to their communities, and pursue their dreams. Faith, who was 2 when President Bush and I first met her, is now in her last year of high school. She’s taking placement exams for college and wants to pursue a career in interior design. We were happy to see Faith and Tatu recently when @thebushcenter marked the 20th anniversary of PEPFAR. Thanks to PEPFAR, 25 million lives have been saved, and 5.5 million babies like Faith have been born HIV-free in the last two decades. This #WomensDay, we celebrate the hope and opportunity PEPFAR has given to strong women and girls, like Faith and Tatu, around the world. We must all continue to support PEPFAR as we fight to end AIDS as a public health threat. Read more about Tatu and Faith’s story at the link in my bio. Repost from @texanbynature • Today kicks off #InternationalDarkSkiesWeek! 🌌 So, why should we value #darkskies? Here are three ways light at night affects human health: 🧑⚕️A new study found that outdoor light at night increases the risk of diabetes by impairing blood glucose control. (Over 9 million cases of diabetes in Chinese adults were attributed to light exposure at night) 😴Too much exposure to artificial lighting at night slows down the production of melatonin (our main sleep hormone) in humans, making it harder to fall asleep and sleep soundly. 🧠Over time, sleep disruption can lead to health complications including unhealthy weight gain and brain fog. Protecting dark skies with lighting practices approved by @idadarksky & @ida_texas protects our natural circadian rhythm (sleep and wake pattern) and human health. Repost @nativetexaspark ******************************* Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) This State Tree of Texas is well represented in the park. They surround the outer circle of the Ceremonial Drive that leads to the Institute and are many other places in the park. According to the LBJWC site—Pecan is one of the most valuable cultivated plants originating in North America. Thomas Jefferson planted seeds at Monticello and gave some to George Washington; now these Pecans are the oldest trees in Mount Vernon. Location in the park: Savanna and Woodland. 7/8/23 The @thebushcenter’s 15-acre Native Texas Park is open daily for self-guided tours from sunrise until sunset. Bush Presidential Center and 12 other presidential foundations and centers have issued a joint statement as a reminder of what makes the United States a great nation; our ideals rooted in freedom and democracy. “The unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, are principles that bind us together as Americans. They have enabled the United States to strive toward a more perfect union, even when we have not always lived up to those ideals….” Visit the link in our bio to read the full statement, share it, and have a conversation.
