Getting your Permit for the infamous Nordschleife circuit isn’t a simple one, for good reason. You need to take a series of theory and practical courses, before accumulating 18 race laps in the lower powered classes, like the one I raced here, snappily named VF2-FWD. There are an absolute litany of classes here (see my meme), but ours is basically a stripped-out road car with slicks. This means it’s actually harder to drive than a full blown GT3 racer, lift-off oversteer is real. 😅
I was lucky to be with people who know what they’re doing, @walkenhorstmotorsport, and my teammates @baileyvoisin and @manuel_maldonado33. I did the first half of our 4hr race, and my gosh the things I saw… 😂 As well as epic slipstream battles on the 2.5km Döttinger straight, I drove with my eyes in the mirror as faster cars sailed past at impossible speeds for my poor little Hyundai, drove past flatbed trucks on their way to recover cars that had crashed somewhere on this mammoth 21km ‘track’ and scared myself silly a few times when the already-close barriers starting inching closer…
I somehow (genuinely, no idea how) got us from P4 in class to the lead at the halfway mark. My teammates finished it off to take a win on my first attempt at the Nordschleife! I should really walk away now with the 100% record 😂
I’ll be back next year to get my remaining laps, for now though attention goes back to our regular schedule with Petit Le Mans next week… | Posted on 08/Oct/2023 14:35:23
