CALLING ALL ART ADDICTS! Art After Dark is back again! I love this late-night arts programme which puts art centre stage in London’s West End with 30 world-class galleries staying open late 12th-13th October. I went to check out some of the current exhibitions which will be open until 9pm including the ground-breaking exhibition of Marina Abramović’s work at the Royal Academy. I’ve written about her work and studied it for years but nothing quite prepared me for physically being in the presence of the performances piece, I feel like every atom of my being felt the impact of the work. Keep an eye out for more Marina in the Piccadilly Lights as well as giant inflatable installation titled ‘The Cornucopia’ by Claire Luxton, and an illuminated installation titled ‘The People You Love’ by Robert Montgomery, which will appear across the West End. Down the road from the RA, Yinka Shonibare’s free exhibition “Ritual Ecstasy of the Modern” at Cristea Roberts felt like another shot in the arm. Onto another icon at The National Gallery with the free exhibition of Paula Rego’s staggering large painting “Crivelli’s Garden” which has been hiding in plain sight for years and is now getting the focused attention it deserves. I pondered her beautiful Magdalen figure over a well-earned meal at the National Gallery’s world-class (truly) restaurant, Ochre. Finally I can’t get enough of the National Portrait Gallery and loved spending time with their free exhibition ‘Art of London Presents: Take A Moment’, where hundreds of famous faces (with eyes closed and thoughts elsewhere) are on display as photographed by Ray Burmiston for mental health awareness. These are just some of the art offerings on the table, go create your own cultural late-night tour on Oct 12 and 13th.
