In my course, “Being a Series Regular,” I tell a story about a Vice President of Casting at a major studio saying, “you’re critiquing the acting. Whereas I am critiquing the actor.” In television, they are casting the person as much as the talent. That’s why casting is truly an art form! They take you in holistically and figure out if you naturally exude the energy (as well as the talent) needed for a specific role. Therefore, it is important to have an idea of how you are perceived. That way, you can lean into it, play against it or consciously make the choice to try to shift the perception. Had an epiphany two days ago… It’s no coincidence I’m being led to have these IG Live conversations at a time where we as actors are all feeling a certain level of uncertainty. Uncertainty why? Because of the upcoming vote to ratify the new SAG-AFTRA contract, the potential threat of artificial intelligence and the impersonal nature of self-tape.
