J. August Richards Instagram – In my course, “Being a Series Regular,” I tell a story about a Vice President of Casting at a major studio saying, “you’re critiquing the acting. Whereas I am critiquing the actor.” In television, they are casting the person as much as the talent. That’s why casting is truly an art form! They take you in holistically and figure out if you naturally exude the energy (as well as the talent) needed for a specific role. Therefore, it is important to have an idea of how you are perceived. That way, you can lean into it, play against it or consciously make the choice to try to shift the perception.
