On this day in 2010, we celebrated the release of ‘Ragged But Right,’ the live album by the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. This gem captured their 1987 performances at the Lunt-Fontanne in NYC, The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, and The Wiltern in Los Angeles. What’s your standout track from this compilation?
“That fall, when the Garcia Band undertook a run of appearances in Northern California, including several university dates, it was a time, as the album’s title suggested, of reflection; not looking back, but more a mirror image of where Garcia was at in the moment. Sharing an obvious kinship with Keith Godchaux (keyboards) and his wife, Donna Jean (vocals), who doubled in those roles with the Dead, as well as a growing bond with bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt, Garcia’s singing and playing sparkle with unconcerned liberation.” – Larson Sutton, @relixmag

“There was an incredible atmosphere. This was the same place where the New York Knicks played and I’d also seen other concerts there on TV by so many amazing people. It was just another show in a great place. The thing I really liked about working with Jerry was we did our shows and we had a good time. Nobody was better than anybody else, we just played our music. It was about the music.” – Jacklyn LaBranch in the liner notes of GarciaLive Volume 16.
Travel back to the Jerry Garcia Band’s show on this date in 1991 at Madison Square Garden, released in 2021 as GarciaLive Volume 16. Listen now on all streaming services, or grab a copy from @garciafamilyprovisions.
