Happy Veteran’s day! As some of you may already know, John left Chicago for Germany where he worked as an Army mechanic. While in Germany, he asked his dad to mail his guitar. Once it arrived, he spent his evenings in the barracks playing and singing all the songs he knew. John never imagined he could make a living as a singer and songwriter.

A Note from @fprine: The time I spent with John on the road made one thing very clear – the community he helped create was always, and remains, at the heart of the music, and the work we continue to do every day. I’m so happy that ‘You Got Gold’ will now become an annual event to ensure that we maintain that connection and grow our beloved community. I look forward to seeing everyone back in Nashville this October, to celebrate John’s songs and help further the work of @sayhellointhere ” More information at: yougotgold.johnprine.com

“Ahmet Ertegun (co-founder and president of Atlantic Records) wasn’t particularly taking any kind of attention to what I was doing. They had the Stones and Led Zeppelin, and he was always on the road with them, enjoying himself, and I was like, “That’s great, but what am I doing here?” I told him I wanted to leave,” Prine said. As the story goes, Ertegun let John out of his contract, and then asked John what he could do for him…..John thought about for a second and asked to borrow Ertegun’s limo….he then took that limo to see Bob Dylan play in Connecticut…

The Newport Festivals Foundation is excited to announce the 2023 John Prine Songwriter Fellowship recipient, Jobi Riccio . The fellowship was created in partnership with John’s family, to celebrate John’s life and the impact he had on the Newport Folk Festival community. Each year, we choose one young songwriter that embodies John’s spirit and provide them with their first slot at the Newport Folk Festival. Newport Festivals Foundation has also partnered with Almanack Arts to provide Jobi with a week-long songwriting retreat on Nantucket this summer. There, she will be given the time, resources, and space to hone her craft. “John Prine was such an integral part of the Newport Folk community,” said Jay Sweet, Executive Producer of the Newport Folk Festival. “It’s an honor to celebrate his legacy by giving a stage to newer artists who show the sparks of truth and the willingness to embrace all aspects of the human condition in their songwriting. It’s clear Jobi embodies much of this spirit which is why we’ve chosen her as the John Prine Fellowship recipient for this year”
