Alice Lee Instagram – I’ve been trying to find the right words, but honestly it’s been really hard. I’ve been processing and grieving. Crying at random times. There are so many parts of this that sadden me, anger me. Asian women, immigrant women, were killed by a white supremacist. Four of them were Korean. The police and media humanized the white supremacist murderer while getting the names of the victims wrong. Racism. Misogyny. Xenophobia. Gun violence. A history of violent white colonialism in Asian countries. A history of violent discrimination against Asians in America. Years of micro-aggressions and “jokes” and not feeling represented or understood in society, in my workplaces, among “friends”. Feeling guilt and shame for having wanted to assimilate in the past. Witnessing a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes since the pandemic. My parents telling me to be careful and to not walk alone because of the climate out there and of course me breaking down because I’m also just worried about them. It’s so much to hold and my heart breaks for my community. This was an extreme act of violence that once again shows how white supremacy is held up by this country’s policing and media coverage. But there are small acts of violence happening all around us – And for me, they happen most frequently in my liberal space by liberal pple. I urge you to look inside and reflect. Standing in solidarity with the Black and Indigenous community and with all communities of color who are constantly told by the Western world that we are not worthy or enough. WE FUCKING ARE. Alice Lee Instagram – Happy Lunar New Year!!! ✨ As we celebrate the year of the Ox, I’m feelings lots of feelings and one of those feelings is that I gotta address what’s happening to the Asian community right now. If your anti-racism doesn’t include racism against Asian people, it’s trash. These recent attacks against Asian pple and elders during the pandemic triggers a lifetime (and more) of micro-aggressions and discrimination our community has felt and that a lot of us have had to suppress cuz we don’t wanna seem “too sensitive” and cuz we try and make space for others, cuz pple think we don’t have it “that bad”. And it hurts. It hurts that our community is being attacked in a violent way, but it also hurts that so many people don’t seem to notice or care or think it’s a big deal. Asian erasure is a real thing – in our society, in Hollywood, in our news sources. And it’s fucked up. Our stories matter. Sometimes I feel like pple – seemingly smart, kind and woke pple – forget that Asians are people of color and also experience racism. If you are anti-racist, you have to also denounce anti-Asian racism. Also, as many people have said, although I think it goes without saying really, this is NOT an oppression Olympics. We are asking for the empathy and awareness and action that we deserve. Also, the root of all this violence and discrimination and racism is white supremacy, and we must continue to make efforts to dismantle it. Periodt.
