As we all know, this year has been one of unprecendented extreme heat, wildfires, floods and other climate change related natural disasters. To honour the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) next week, we bring you the first definitive Changes episode on climate change, with special guest, @cfigueres. An internationally recognised leader on global climate change, Ms Figueres was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This meant she was the woman who managed to get 196 countries to agree to commit to the historical Paris Agreement of 2015. Now hugely decorated, she is the co-founder of an organisation called Global Optimism, co-host of the podcast “Outrage & Optimism” and the co-author of the recently published book, “The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis”. Christiana’s levels of diplomacy, resilience and determination are extraordinary, and thats’ what I wanted to explore here, both the macro issues with climate change (what will the world look like in 2050 if we do and don’t cut our carbon emissions? ) and the micro, how to even begin trying to make change that is so vast, so seemingly insurmountable? How to convince the world to change how they live, work, travel, ….and most importantly, what can WE do to make a difference? Would you say the following are ‘feminine traits’: empathy, intuition, compassion, inclusion, humility, capacity to combine long-term and short-term thinking, willingness to collaborate..? They are often considered so, maybe because the average woman lives them more deeply and more explicitly than the average man, but of course that certainly does not mean they are limited to women. Two things are beyond doubt. Firstly, these are exactly the qualities we need to act effectively on the climate crisis and secondly, they are sorely missing from much of the current political sphere today, where of course the overwhelming number of positions of power are still held by men. According to @unwomen, only 26.5% of politicians in single or lower houses of national parliaments are women, and only 28 women serve as Heads of State and/or Government (as of September 2023). At the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years. This is why I was more than happy to contribute to ‘Leading Our Way, How Women Are Re-defining Leadership’, a new book by @gaiavanderesch Alongside luminaries Gitanjali Rao, Becky Sauerbrunn, Diane von Furstenberg, Tawakkol Karman, Comfort Ero and Gloria Steinem, I talked about my own experience in leadership and how we can reshape the future through the lessons we have learned.
