Meaghan B. Murphy Instagram – Best News Ever: I’ve got the heart of an average 20-year-old female! 🫀
Although our family cancer risk has always been my biggest worry, my grandfather passed away at age 50 of a massive heart attack in the living room. My beloved Nana lived to the awesome age of 93, but relied on a pacemaker from the time she was in her 60s. Not to mention the fact that every 60 seconds, someone in this country suffers a fatal heart attack. In half of those cases, there is NO warning or previous symptoms.
I was pumped for my stress test. There’s no physical activity (or coffee) allowed on the morning of the exam. I came to @princetonlongevity in workout clothes itching to break a sweat and caffeinate. An exercise physiologist asked me about my workout history, wired me with electrodes + set me loose on the treadmill to measure my oxygen as the intensity increased. (Confession: I got a little competitive. I didn’t want Pat to outlast me and I logged a solid 13 minutes probing her to divulge his results. She wouldn’t.)
Assessing VO2 Max is a smart way to screen for potential abnormalities in electrical rhythms of the heart during exercise. Research has shown VO2 Max may actually be a stronger predictor of future cardiac events, such as heart attacks, when compared to trad risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure & type 2 diabetes.
Here was my BIG SHOCKER: I haven’t run in a year! My only “cardio” has been regular @barmethodwestfield classes and walking 10K steps per day, BUT I’m in the BEST heart shape of my life—even stronger than when I was running 3:29 marathons! WALKING FREAKING WORKS!!!
I may or may not have “beat” Pat on the treadmill 😉 but we both won out. PLC offers an array of Cardiac Scans. Pat got the CT Heart Scan, which is said to be the most accurate and effective tool for measuring your cardiovascular risk and is the only non-invasive way to know for sure if you’re developing plaque in your arteries.
I’m happy to report our healthy hearts look like they will be beating as one for a long a$$ time! 🙏🏼
More results to come!
