Not technically a castle but it’s close enough in my book! The 8th and final castle (sadly😭) on our UK vacation/road trip was the Palace of Holyroodhouse! Fun facts: 1. This is the official residence of the British royal family when they’re in Edinburgh on official duties. 2. Mary Queen of Scots lived here when she left France (after her 1st husband died) and it’s where her 2nd husband (her cousin😳) attempted to murder her. She swiftly had him killed, as one does in those days. 3. Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart) lived here before the Jacobites lost their battle in Culloden in 1746 (where my #outlander fans at?!). He believed the British throne was his birthright and led the Jacobite rebellion in an attempt to regain the crown for the Stuart family after the union of Scotland and England happened in 1707. 4. Holyrood means holy cross. The kind was out hunting on the grounds in Scotland when he had a Vission of a stag bearing a glowing cross between his antlers. He built the abbey that is now in ruins on the grounds and named it “Holy Rood.” The image of the stag with a cross between its antlers are even in the gates to the palace (see last pic)

The 7th castle on our UK road trip: Edinburgh Castle 😍🏴 After our long drive from Balmoral to Edinburgh, we were excited to get some rest and hit the ground running the next morning. Our first stop was #EdinburghCastle of course! It’s a massive castle that sits on Castle Rock which was formed by a volcanic eruption millions of years ago! This was once the royal home of Mary Queen of Scots and where she gave birth to her only child, James VI, whose coronation united Scotland and England. James was born in 1566 and became king upon Queen Elizabeth I’s death in July 1567. He was only 13 month when he became king!

Castle #6 on our UK road trip: Balmoral Castle Our drive from Inverness to Aberdeenshire was nothing short of spectacular. And then, as the sun was setting, an ethereal fog rolled in and made our visit to Balmoral Castle even more enchanting. #BalmoralCastle is where the late Queen Elizabeth II called home during the summers. She passed away here last year and all I could think of was, “damn, what a magical place to transition into heaven.” We’re in love with the Scottish Highlands and the lovely people we’ve had the pleasure of meeting so far. The sunsets are like nothing we’ve ever witnessed 🏴😍 🥃 #sláinte
