I call this one, “The Crown of Life.” A reminder to me that in order to find life we have to put to rest the things trying to take it from us.
When we’re still under the spell of our vice (you can fill in the blank with yours) at first, we tell ourselves we’ll be more miserable without it. Take alcohol for example, I gave it up because @catritchson did. I couldn’t wait for sober October to be over so we could have some wine again. And boy do I make a mean Key Lime Martini 🤣 Over time, I realized she was much more serious about her commitment to be free of alcohol and its many compulsions than I was. I had to reckon with not drinking again. I said out loud more than once, I feel like we’re going to miss out on some memories. Five years sober and I see that from this side of time, from this side of putting alcohol 6 feet under, I’ve experienced far more color than I ever imagined possible. I don’t feel like I’m missing out and I don’t mind at all not needing recovery days from it. The world is anything but bleak or black and white without drinking. (Hats off to @catritchson for guiding me towards that truth).
This is just one tiny example of what I think of when I see this new tat. I want to get more comfortable with the idea of death and giving to it. The color that waits on the other side is worth the pain of purposefully filling our daily metaphorical casket.
It’s worth mentioning, the price is always lower when we do this work willingly. Don’t wait until life tires and makes the decision for you. Those bills are always stomach churning when they come due. | Posted on 11/Dec/2023 08:32:54
