ICYMI — this week CBP halted rail operations at El Paso and Eagle Pass. The closure of these two rail ports will severely impact trade between Texas and Mexico. So… why did they close the ports? Migrants have been using the trains traveling through Mexico to get dropped off right next to our border. They climb on the trains and use them as free Uber rides to US ports of entry. We don’t have enough border patrol agents to cover the massive migrant influx, so they have to pull customs agents away from ports of entry, and now rail checkpoints as well. Earlier this year Mexico became our number one trading partner, and if imports and exports aren’t moving, we have a a huge problem. So now we don’t just have an immigration crisis, we have an economic crisis as well. Biden COULD use this problem as leverage with Mexico. Economic pain will always be worse for Mexico than us. Get migrants off the trains, stop letting Mexico be a direct transit zone into the U.S., etc… There’s a lot of ways this could be used to our advantage to drastically decrease the number of migrants we have at the border every day. But what has the Biden admin done so far? You guessed it. Nothing.
