Utah just became the 19th state in the US to outlaw a discredited practice known as conversion therapy for minors. Conversion therapy is an attempt to forcibly change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. It does not work, and studies show that those subjected to it, or who choose to undergo it, are put at a greater risk of depression and suicide. Eighteen other states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have banned conversion therapy for young people, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Babies and children are dying because of the soil on which they were born. It happened on October 7th and hasn’t stopped happening since. War is hell and hell isn’t for children. Save the Pat Benatar jokes. Or don’t. I won’t be here to see them.
As I reflect on the week I have just spent at @elephantnaturepark, I am reminded of things I thought I knew but didn’t, thought I’d do but shouldn’t and ultimately that it’s possible to adore these majestic miracle beasts even more than I already did. My pal and costar @christinasmoses and I have started the account @elephantruths to help educate and spread word about the grave realities facing both African and Asian elephants. You will see facts and figures that will startle and sadden you. But you will also see stories of rescue and rehabilitation that will inspire and give you hope. There is only one @lek_chailert — the founder of this park and woman who has dedicated her life to giving a voice to the voiceless. But there are millions and millions of us who are capable of helping if we just know how to do it. There is great power in your hand right now. We can educate through social media. ❤️🐘❤️ And possibly emojis.
