Equal parts stubborn and intuitive, Franc was able to prop us up when we needed it most and keep us grounded when everything else felt up in the air. Conversion therapy is an attempt to forcibly change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. It does not work, and studies show that those subjected to it, or who choose to undergo it, are put at a greater risk of depression and suicide. Eighteen other states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have banned conversion therapy for young people, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Caption : On day one of the biggest job this kid from Texas had ever been gifted, this icon recognized I was shaking like a leaf. He put his arm around me and took me for a walk. We talked for about 45 minutes while lights were being moved and adjusted. Football, European vacations with Eastwood, Smokey and the Bandit — I mostly listened and relaxed. Caption : Yai Bua does not walk around much these days. Her legs are weak, but her stubborn determination shuffles her further along into her platinum years. Today she walked down into her private pool and had a nap. To be in water helps her old bones, and she can relax from her body aches, as the sun passes through the sky and the birds dance about her in that quiet area of the Park. Yai Bua has survived so much in her life, and she teaches us about dogged perseverance and the enjoyment of the simplest things in life. Caption : So deeply grateful that @christinasmoses and I were blessed with the opportunity to meet this beautiful lady who had known so much pain and suffering at the hands of humans but still had room in her heart for love and forgiveness. Thank you, Professor Yai Bua. Rest peacefully. Here’s the message from @elephantnaturepark founder, Lek Chailert: To dear friends and supporters, With heavy heart, I bring the sad news of our beloved Yai Bua having passed away. Yesterday she still enjoyed her swimming pool, eating well, and walking around her shelter. The mahout contacted us last night to report that Yai Bua had lain down, and we told him to let her sleep . For a long time now, when Yai Bua lays down, it is difficult for her to stand up by herself. So, as with many old elephants, they are fearful to lay down. That she lay down is good, and a chance for her to rest. We didn’t expect it to be her final rest. This morning we discovered that she passed away peacefully while she slept. I will write more about her later as I am now not at the Park. It is hard for me to have lost her without saying goodbye. We loved her dearly, and have learned so much from her. To have known YaiBua is to be enriched with courage, tenacity and an indomitable spirit. R.I P our beautiful lady . Caption : As I reflect on the week I have just spent at @elephantnaturepark, I am reminded of things I thought I knew but didn’t, thought I’d do but shouldn’t and ultimately that it’s possible to adore these majestic miracle beasts even more than I already did. My pal and costar @christinasmoses and I have started the account @elephantruths to help educate and spread word about the grave realities facing both African and Asian elephants. You will see facts and figures that will startle and sadden you. But you will also see stories of rescue and rehabilitation that will inspire and give you hope. There is only one @lek_chailert — the founder of this park and woman who has dedicated her life to giving a voice to the voiceless. But there are millions and millions of us who are capable of helping if we just know how to do it. There is great power in your hand right now. Dr. Tom from Elephant Nature Park began treating her immediately but she is still unable to stand up. Muoy, the project owner has hired machinery to help lift Happy and stabilise her. After almost a year of no income Muoy is struggling to cover the costs of Happy’s treatment and hiring the equipment to help Happy stand up. Four young elephants who have been displaced from their former work are moving temporarily to our project called Elephant Highlands to live with us there. We were hoping to bring them to the Park but were not given permission due to lockdown. They will enjoy the beauty and freedom of Highlands for now. These elephants came from a camp where their work was in performing. We will give them the best situation as as we can at this time. ❤️🐘🙏🏽

Caption : We are overwhelmed with gratitude to announce that we reached our MATCH goal of $45,000 in less than 48 hours !! But there is other great news to share! Darrick Thomson, of Save Elephant Foundation, has informed us that his parents will offer $55,000 CAD ($38,000 USD) to Match. And Amber Rivera, a repeat ENP volunteer, has also offered $7,500 to be matched. That totals an ADDITIONAL $45,500 TO BE MATCHED in support of Elephant Nature Park. Lek has been reaching out to help neighboring elephant camps in Thailand who have felt the impact of COVID-19. Due to the absence of tourism, approximately 1000 elephants are now without work, and facing the potential of starvation.
