Aloha on the purple carpet
If you notice, the beautiful Christina Lei is missing from this first photo. I had the intention of gifting it to someone in particular, and when she walked right past me at the after-party I gently tapped her on the shoulder, pointed to the button I was wearing, and told her the history of the Christina lei. I took off the lei and proudly placed it around her neck. It was a beautiful moment between @successful_writer and I, and one of my favorite memories of the night.
It was so inspiring to bear witness to and partipate in the magnificence of the newest addition to @thecolorpurple canon. I stood on that carpet with Oprah, Spielberg, and Tyler Perry, and the list just goes on and on. To know that it all started with a thought and the stroke of Alice Walker’s pen… Incredible.
To top it all off… I brought my aunt Pat with me. She’s given me a roof over my head, put food in my belly, and given me a car to get around in for so many years whenever I was in LA. I love you, Auntyโค๏ธ. She loved the lei I gave her too!

The importance of a black barbershop:
Any black man without a bald cut or really long hair that’s out of town for longer than a week or two will tell you he’s going to be looking for a barber. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a shop that offers more than a fresh cut. This brother is one of two barbers I’ve had here in Hawaii, and beyond keeping me tightened up, he keeps me connected to the community in significant and positive ways. This is the second time he’s brought me out to serve at the Salvation Army Hawaii Thanksgiving Dinner, and my heart is full.
I’ve lost close friends and brothers since I’ve been here, but I’ve gained good brothers as well. I am thankful for this brother right here. His name is King, and he wears the Crown well. โ๐ฟ

On 12/9 @afroaloha in collaboration with @hacdst hosted a double auditorium early private screening of @thecolorpurple on Oโahu.
@stephenhillacts, who plays โBusterโ in the film, was our special guest of the evening. ๐๐๐
Everyone arrived in their purple ready to watch the musical adaptation of a timeless classic! The film is fantastic!
Portion of the proceeds went to @hacdst scholarship fund which directly supports high school seniors on Oโahu.
Before the film started, our pre show entertainment lineup had everyone rocking!
Be sure to go watch the film, which hit theaters Christmas Day!

First and Last Unko
As I was leaving the Blaisdell yesterday, an Aunty asked me, “Who are you? You have on a Lei, so you must be somebody.” She took off so fast I couldn’t take it off and give it to her. So I waited a few minutes and when Uncle walked out with his guitar in tow I gave it to him. I asked if he enjoyed the food, and he said yes. He said he had a good time and that he was happy. He smiled for the camera before playing a tune. I saw his picture in an article from @staradvertiser, and it turns out he was actually the 1st in line for dinner. #chickenskin
This was my second favorite moment of the day. The first was when a kid gave me a big hug as we shook everyone’s hands as they entered the building. Thanks, blessings, and gratitude.

This brother has provided the soundtrack for so many incredible moments. I remember getting a last min invite to a party for the movie Bessie, and he was the DJ. I was at the gym and didn’t have clothes for the party. I grabbed a shirt off a sale rack (my least favorite shirt ever, and yall keep finding that picture) and made my way to the party. I had recently auditioned for HBO’s Lewis and Clark series, and since Bessie was also produced by HBO, I decided to walk around that party with the book the series was based on in tow. I figured somebody would see me with and say something. Nobody said a word, but I did book the role.
A few years later, I booked the role of T.C. in @magnumpi and the good brothers @actorsamsmith
and @omarjdorsey took me out for a drink to celebrate. Omar bought us some ridiculously expensive @pappy_van_winkle_bourbon, and I’ll never forget his generosity. Anyway, D-nice just happened to be sitting next to me at the bar, and when I told him I would be playing T.C. on Magnum P.I. he was genuinely excited for me, too. We talked about the struggles of the business, and he shared how he was once living out of his car. I appreciated those brothers at that bar that night more than they’ll ever know.
A few more years later, I’m in Hawaii, and D-Nice got us all through the pandemic with Club Quarantine. #IYKYK
A few years after that(almost a week ago), I snapped this picture of D-Nice at the afterparty for the new @thecolorpurple premiere. So basically, whenever I find myself doing something extraordinary…D-Nice has been on the 1 and 2’s. He plays for folks like Oprah, Spielberg, and for presidents at the White House these days but he rocks the party just the same. And the people that still have VHS tapes of Call Me D-Nice, Crumbs on the Table, and Self-Distruction recorded from Video Music Box, Rap City, and Yo MTV Raps be in the building too! I really hope he comes out with a book. His story must be incredible.
Okay…story time is over for today, but be sure to catch Omar Dorsey in his new series, Bookie. I just started watching last night, and it’s hilarious.
