The kindest. Gentlest. He wasn’t just the voice. He embodied it. He walked it on screen and off. His laugh was infectious. He was warm and engaging. Humble. He was a story teller and I never passed an opportunity to listen. It’s what I will miss most. I can watch episodes and play games. But what saddens me is knowing I can’t just talk to him. Last night we “shared oxygen with a true living legend”, as @a.wintory so eloquently stated. #johnwilliams is just that. At 90 he stepped onto that podium with poise and grace and captivated 18,000 people; delighting in their appreciation for the legacy of music he has curated as they waved their light sabers in the air in honor. Every single one of us were caught up in the whimsy, in the nostalgia, in the magic. Star Wars and indeed all of the contributions Williams has made, especially the collaborative work with Spielberg in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s, have left an indelible mark on me. My highlight was him closing the show with the Imperial March, Traveller’s current favourite. I smiled and cried as a realization dawned on me: almost 50 years of history, a lineage of fandom has irrevocably been changed now because of a 4 year old’s love for this franchise. No one else will appreciate that or even be aware of it but our little family. But therein lies the beauty and a true reflection of the art. It changes us without trying and we change it without it even noticing. And even better, in doing so we find a community. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ET, all of it, as incredible pieces of filmmaking and storytelling as they are, are nothing without music. It is the truest expression of the heart surpassing the capability of words. Here’s to you, Maestro, a class act of the highest order. Words, in fact fail me even now, in trying to express my gratitude for this opportunity, the knowledge (both trivial and profound) and friendship that comes with knowing Austin. Four years ago at #NYCC I purchased these two issues. @spookysydney has held on to them for me until yesterday, where (to both our relief) they and I were at long last reunited. I was reminded by @igndotcom that this month marks the 34th anniversary of this seminal watershed moment for both Batman and comics in general. The writing, the colors, panel layout are all just perfection. I love where #comics currently are but always love returning to where they were. Have you read this arc? What are you currently reading?
