Merecidamente celebramos la abolición del ejército con una bella nueva moneda ,recordando que la inversión en la educación, la cultura y la protección de la naturaleza tiene valor muy superior al gasto en temas bélicos. Gracias Don Pepe! — Costa Rica celebrates the abolition of the army with this beautiful new coinage, a reminder that investment in education, culture and the protection of nature is of much higher value than military spending. Thank you Don Pepe!
This is the ‘Volkswagen 2015’ moment for the #COP28 Presidency. Caught red handed, the Presidency has no other option but to now unequivocally step up the transparency, responsibility and accountability with which they lead the process. This COP Presidency will be under public scrutiny like no other ever before. This is a deep challenge and a transformational opportunity for them. The planet cannot afford for them to not step up.

I am so thrilled and honoured to be in this brilliant and inspiring company of women from around the world, the BBC 100 Women 2023. As we all know, this year has been one of unprecendented extreme heat, wildfires, floods and other climate change related natural disasters. Acknowledging this, 2023’s list also highlights women who have been working to help their communities tackle climate change and take action to adjust to its impacts. A few of the inspirational individuals working in this space are highlighted in this post: Sonia Guajajara @guajajarasonia Sophia Kianni @sophiakianni Wanjira Mathai Alicia Cahuiya Marcela Fernandez @marceglaciar I salute every one of these women, all those on the list and the countless others behind the scenes working equally as hard to create a better world for future generations. We are choosing our future right now. By 2030, we collectively will have chosen either ‘business as usual’ which will lead us to a near and long-term future of constant destruction and increasing human misery, the likes of which we have never experienced on this planet, OR we can choose exponential decarbonization paths which will give us a world that is clean, healthy, more just, more efficient, a world better than we have ever known. Change is happening faster than we think. Let’s actively and intentionally choose the direction of that change and the future it brings.
I often talk about facing the climate and ecological crises head on: not shying away from the pain and in fact using it to generate the clarity of what needs to be done. Here’s a young woman doing just that with this song, musician and activist @louiseharrismusic. I’m so pleased to hear that our book #TheFutureWeChoose has been part of her inspiration – and she in turn is inspiring me now. Louise said, “Reading this book allowed me – for the first time ever – to imagine a world that isn’t completely f**ked. And if we can’t even imagine that world, how on Earth (literally) are we meant to get there? It paints not only the worst case scenario future vividly, but it paints the best – the one we can still choose to create, together.” A powerful song. Thank you Louise 🙏
Christiana reads ‘Interstellar’ part of “We Are The Possible – 12 Poems for 12 Days of COP28” a project from the University of Exeter for which scientists, writers, youth leaders, artists, and educators from the UK and UAE came together to produce a shared body of writing responding to COP28. With this beautiful poem, we wish you restful and joyful holidays, remembering that rest keeps us tender and recharges our power for all that lies ahead. #stubbornoptimism #stubbornoptimist #climatepositive #climatecrisis #positivenews #climateaction #climateeducation #climateemergency #outrageandoptimism #climatepodcast #climatejustice #climatenews
👉 IS THE COP STILL FIT FOR PURPOSE? Here’s what Christiana had to say on it in the latest episode of @Bloomberg Zero: “I haven’t lost faith in the process. We have to understand that the COPs were designed for one purpose, and that is to hold the multilateral process that reaches legally binding agreements. That is what it was designed to do…. It has succeeded, because in 2015, we adopted the Paris agreement. And in 2021, we adopted the rule book for the Paris Agreement. So substantially… we are in the process of moving from negotiation to implementation. The COPs were never meant to implement, that’s the point. Implementation doesn’t happen as the result of negotiation in negotiation halls. It happens in the real economy, through policies, through healthy competition, through investments, through innovation and technology. That’s where the push is now. So the question then is, does the COP get redesigned for this new purpose to support implementation? Does it stay as a multilateral negotiating process? Or do you bring both of these together in a new way that honestly, cannot be what we have now.” What do you think? 🤔 Hear the full conversation with Akshat Rathi in this special episode of @bloomberg Zero, bringing Outrage Optimism to Oil Country – wherever you get your podcasts. #cop28 #stubbornoptimism #stubbornoptimist #climatepositive #climatecrisis #positivenews #climateaction #climateeducation #climateemergency #outrageandoptimism #climatepodcast #climatejustice #climatenews

Delighted to talk to Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell for @restispolitics LEADING. Rory asked me why should people care about the climate crisis? Simply – if we continue down the path we’re on, vast swathes of currently populated land will become uninhabitable. Multiply today’s migration problems by 10, 20, 100(?) and you might begin to imagine the military conflict, economic pressure and political chaos that will ensue. It will simply be unmanageable and will impact every one of us, every one of our children and grandchildren with disastrous consequences. If on the other hand, we course-correct (as much as is still possible) we have an opportunity to create a thriving, liveable future for all beings. This is why NOT caring deeply about the climate crisis just does not make sense. You can listen to our whole conversation wherever you get your podcasts. #cop28 #costarica #climatecrisis
