Hiking up Acatenango Volcano has got to be a highlight of my life!! Some people even hiked up El Fuego (the volcano that erupted in the video) but by that point we were too exhausted to move 😮💨 ever wonder why so many volcanoes are close to each other? I’m in El Salvador 🇸🇻 where the national currency is USD (and Bitcoin!) 💸 it got me wondering, what motivates a country’s choice of currency, and why do exchange rates fluctuate over time? And what does it mean for some currencies to be “strong”? Then I remembered I learned this in university and went back through my old notes 😂 As with any other price, the price of a currency is super complicated and influenced by tons of factors! But here is a very simplified explanation of why we have different fluctuating exchange rates 📈💸

Why do different instruments sound different? How come you can distinguish between a piano and a flute both playing the same note? The answer is overtones! Each note carries with it a symphony of many notes, called overtones or harmonics. The relative volumes are what create the “timbre”, which is an instrument’s unique texture. If you want to see them for yourself, the spectrum I showed on screen is just a free app I got from the App Store “sound spectrum analysis” Everyone may be able to sing/play overtones by default, but I should stress that is still different from throat singing which takes a lot of practice! The example I played at the beginning is the very talented Tuvan throat singer @throat_singing @alexandr_kuular !
