Richard O’Barry Instagram – The CIA Once Wanted to Use Dolphins to Sink Enemy Ships: Back in 2019, the CIA released a trove of previously secret files that detail various undercover experiments, including the strange dolphin endeavor coined “Project OXYGAS.”
The year was 1963. The CIA sent an agent to Miami Seaquarium to spy on me while I was training Flipper for the upcoming television series. The CIA wanted to know how it was possible to train dolphins to do the things they were seeing in the movies. Especially underwater. He tried to recruit me into their “dolphins of war program.” Wanted me to come to work for them at their “Undersea Warfare School” at Point Magu Navy Base, California. What he showed me was pretty bizarre, morally repugnant and ethically untenable. I passed on the job. Stayed with the Flipper TV series and Hugo the killer whale at Miami Seaquarium. The “Dolphin of War” program was transferred away from the CIA to the US Navy—civilian contractors actually. It’s a “black budget” project. The cash 💰 flows to the civilian contractors and the details are top secret. No accountability. We the taxpayers pick up the tab for this abusive, cruel program. 13 dolphins were sent into action in Vietnam to participate in a “harbor defense unit.” I don’t believe any of the dolphins returned home from the war.
