When we explored Kerala with @highontripsbyrg , they made sure that we tried a sadhya meal everywhere we went! From a local family’s house to the houseboat we were staying at and it was all so gooood🤤
This feast isn’t just a meal; it’s the heart of Kerala’s celebrations ❤️
Traditionally prepared for the harvest festival of Onam in Kerala, when the mythical King Mahabali visits the homes of his people to see whether they are happy or not, and so to honour his visit, the people of Kerala prepare a grand meal and celebrate the occasion!
Interestingly, the number of dishes served is said to reflect the wealth and prosperity of the host! In fact, the payasam (dessert) is the most luxurious item on the leaf and so the variety of payasams served is directly proportional to one’s social status!!
This feast isn’t just about the incredible flavours and textures; it’s about the unity it represents! Sadya brings people together, breaking barriers, and fostering a sense of belonging and community🫂
I highly recommend you to experience yours at a local homestay or during temple festivals. But you can find some exemplary sadyas served at various restaurants as well.
