Lieve Allemaal, een openhartig interview in @janmagazinenl ging vandaag live, waarin ik dieper inga op de emotionele impact van de verhalen die ik vastlegde en waarom dit boek zo belangrijk is. Een deel hiervan deel ik hieronder; Ruim 26 jaar nadat Chloé Chanté Leenheer zelf op het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag werd aangenomen, maakt ze een fotoboek over de Oekraïense dansers die in het gebouw worden opgevangen. The Last Dance gaat onder meer over de helende kracht van kunst, en helpt de fotograaf om haar eigen verleden te verwerken. Waar gaat fotoboek ‘The Last Dance’ over? Voor ‘The Last Dance’ fotografeerde Chloé Chanté Leenheer verschillende Oekraïense dansers, die in 2022 huisvesting kregen in het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Het gebouw, dat jarenlang een cruciale rol heeft gespeeld in het Nederlandse culturele landschap, wordt momenteel gesloopt. Samen met @unitedukrainianballet legde Chloé niet alleen de laatste momenten in het pand vast, maar ook het verhaal van de gevluchte dansers. Zij wonen inmiddels in Kijkduin, Den Haag, waar ze ook trainen en repeteren voor diverse voorstellingen. Het zijn prachtige, intieme beelden geworden, die goed laten zien hoe dans een manier kan zijn om met trauma’s om te gaan. Het fotograferen was een aangrijpend proces, vertelt Leenheer. Zo maakten de oude schoollockers in het gebouw diepe indruk op haar. ‘Niet om boeken in op te bergen, maar kinderspeelgoed. Denk aan een popje in haar mandje, tijdelijk veilig gesteld tussen het spelen door. Als moeder raakte me dat diep: alles wat je wilt is het veilig houden van je kind.’ Wanneer ze de dansers fotografeerde, ontwaarde ze bijna tastbare pijn in hun blik. ‘En toch toonden ze een ongelooflijke veerkracht. Hun verhalen zijn niet alleen pijnlijk, maar bieden ook inspiratie. Ik heb diepe bewondering voor deze groep. *verder in de comment’s
