Gabriella Wilde Instagram – Repost from @projectmamauk – More than 1 in 10 people develop a mental illness during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby, however this statistic jumps up to one in three migrant women who experience symptoms of perinatal depression. Migrant women specifically are at risk of perinatal mental disorders due to stressors experienced before, during and after migration. The current government hostility is only set to make things worse.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over this last year more than ever, we recognise social support is an important protective factor as we’ve seen mental health issues significantly raise, with our Mother Companions supporting mothers through PTSD, postpartum psychosis and depression. Our work is more crucial now than ever.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We fully support the The NHS’s plan to expanding their mental health services. We hope these services are inclusive, culturally safe and nuanced in supporting the needs of displaced mamas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
