Liberté Chan Instagram – I was diagnosed with clinical depression and generalized anxiety disorder at 23 years old. After the diagnosis, my psychiatrist prescribed SSRI’s and I took the pills for 8 years.

While the medication helped, there came a point in my life when I wanted to stop taking it and after a few months of weaning myself off of them, I was medication free.

Today, I still suffer from bouts of depression and high-anxiety panic attacks, but instead of relying on pills, I practice other self-soothing techniques:

– Yoga
– Walks in nature
– Journaling
– Meditation
– EFT (emotional freedom technique) Tapping
– Weekly talk therapy with my psychologist
– Soft Belly Breathing

I never understood why the breathing worked so well at combating stress and anxiety until I took a deep dive into the science behind it. ICYMI, I’m halfway through a year-long course of becoming a Functional Medicine Health Coach. I’ve been learning all about Mind-Body Techniques and soft belly breathing happens to be one of my favorite practices.

Turns out deep, slow breathing trips the vagus nerve, putting you in a parasympathetic state. It literally shifts you out of the fight or flight response (sympathetic nervous system) and into the rest and digest state when you feel safe and at ease.
