So how did they become part of the traditional dress of indigenous Aymara women in Bolivia? It’s rumored that railway workers from Britain who were working there had been delivered a shipment of hats (for themselves) that were too small, so they tried to sell or give them to the locals. They were too small for the men but the women loved them and it became a trend, so popular that it was eventually absorbed into their traditional wear.
