Cool hat history: Bowler hats were invented by Thomas & William Bowler in 1848 in mid Victorian Britain. So how did they become part of the traditional dress of indigenous Aymara women in Bolivia? It’s rumored that railway workers from Britain who were working there had been delivered a shipment of hats (for themselves) that were too small, so they tried to sell or give them to the locals. They were too small for the men but the women loved them and it became a trend, so popular that it was eventually absorbed into their traditional wear. There’s no legitimate source that can explain the true story for how bowler hats became a part of Bolivian culture, but nonetheless it looks amazing & is an interesting example of how trade & travel have affected fashion history 👒
