My kids were very impressed with @jennaortega on @nbcsnl… so I decided to REALLY impress them by showing off what I did when I was only one year older than Jenna. When I was 15, I first told my mom I wanted to audition professionally. She didn’t hold me back. She took me to NYC, and she walked me through it. So when the opportunity to do #WeAreFamilyFox came up and my 13 year-old lit up like a carbon copy of me at that age… I let her put herself on tape. I got her some voice lessons. And I walked her through it. She’d never sung in front of people before. So proud of my baby girl. And I call her that because when I watched her tonight, all I could see was the newborn in the bassinet who I could not stop looking at in awe. Kid’s still got it 😇

Careful y’all… It’s snake season out there. My son had a dream last night that we found a coral snake and then – mere hours later – we found one. So trust your intuition, keep your eyes open, and take all the precautions. And – enjoy the weather while we have it. Definitely don’t forget to do that. * Also – for clarification – while the coral snake has the second-strongest venom of any snake (black mamba having the strongest), because they’re generally timid and have a less-effective poison delivery system, there have been no reported deaths from coral snakes since the 1960’s. Been supporting @operationsmile for years, and this year I got to take my kids to their annual fundraiser in Park City. Operation Smile provides free surgery and care for children all around the world born with cleft lip & cleft palate. Kids who don’t otherwise have access to an approximately one-hour procedure that allows them to eat, drink, speak (and yes, smile) with the same ease as the rest of us. Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors, and organizers who work to make these surgeries possible. 3 years ago… our first year in Austin. Everyone told us: “It never snows like this!” But it did. We lost our water, electricity was intermittent, and we had to figure it out. Melting snow for the backs of toilets, cutting fallen trees for firewood. Using the side smoker because we had brisket in the freezer and we all needed some protein. It was a challenging few days for us. Devastating for many in Texas. We were lucky… because we had community. We had people in our land (a few of them trapped here) who pitched in, rode it out with us, and made the most of it. One of them, after being snowed in with (then 5) tiny Van Der Beeks…decided she wanted babies. (It usually goes one of two ways: they either double-up on birth control or get pregnant 😂) This storm was the moment it really hit me that all the values I vibed with in LA – sustainability, conservation, community – weren’t just ideas out here. They were a way of life. And a means of survival. And I started thinking very differently about how much I relied on any public agency to save the day… Cheers to everyone snowed in today.
