James Van Der Beek Instagram – 3 years ago… our first year in Austin. Everyone told us: “It never snows like this!” But it did. We lost our water, electricity was intermittent, and we had to figure it out. Melting snow for the backs of toilets, cutting fallen trees for firewood. Using the side smoker because we had brisket in the freezer and we all needed some protein.
It was a challenging few days for us. Devastating for many in Texas. We were lucky… because we had community. We had people in our land (a few of them trapped here) who pitched in, rode it out with us, and made the most of it. One of them, after being snowed in with (then 5) tiny Van Der Beeks…decided she wanted babies. (It usually goes one of two ways: they either double-up on birth control or get pregnant 😂)
This storm was the moment it really hit me that all the values I vibed with in LA – sustainability, conservation, community – weren’t just ideas out here. They were a way of life. And a means of survival. And I started thinking very differently about how much I relied on any public agency to save the day…
