Jimmy Chin Instagram – In 2002, I went on expedition to the Chang Tang Plateau, in northwestern Tibet. @conrad_anker @rickridgeway, and the late Galen Rowell and I trekked 275 miles unsupported in search of the hidden birthing grounds of the chiru, a Tibetan antelope that had been pushed to the brink of extinction as demand for Shatoosh shawls – made from chiru cashmere – skyrocketed. After 25 days of trekking, we found the Chiru the day before they began giving birth.

Going in the shade in Antarctica meant a 10 degree drop in temps…which is normally fine…but when your base temp is -10 degrees F, it can be a little sad to leave the sun. Belay layering system on Ulvetanna = 3 base layers, synthetic puffy jacket, mid weight down jacket, big down parka, topped off with a really big down belay parka. I kept thinking about the kid in A Christmas Story.
