When we read the Scriptures with the topic of fear in mind, we see that some version of “fear not” appears more than three hundred times. These words commonly appear as commandments, but like Jesus’ words to the grieving widow of Nain (“Weep not”; Luke 7:13), they are actually words of compassion and comfort. Because after the fall “what is born of the flesh is flesh” (John 3:6), and “the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God; indeed, it cannot be, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:7-8, my translation).
