Amber Tamblyn Instagram – My least favorite person and 17th favorite poet is 50 years young today (yesterday, really) and I can’t believe how many poetry tours on motorcycles, arguments in bars, impromptu shows in living rooms, lifeguard towers, and double decker buses we’ve been through together— how many cigarettes we’ve wanted to put out on each other’s faces, how many bottles of bourbon we’ve raced to the bottom of, how many people’s broken hearts we’ve shattered or helped put back together again, how many horrible, honest, holy moments we’ve shared along the way. Twenty years to be exact. (See our first show flier from Upright Citizens Brigade in 2004.) We were such young puppies in some of these pictures taken by @mattwignall across too many tours and cities to count. Now look at us: too old to party and too hot to handle.
Happy birthday, brother. I love you, occasionally. Someday I hope they write a movie about your crazy life and cast a less attractive, semi-talented Harry Styles. Until then, nothing can imitate the real thing: you, and what you’ve got, and what you’ve given to the world.
“Teased by success,
we are like vampires in a tampon factory. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Someone plug my lungs back into the guitar amps. All distortion, all the time.
Aren’t you sick of being appraised wholesale? Aren’t you sick of sailing on listing ships? Aren’t you weary from playing cello with ex-lover’s bones?
I am.”
