Ultradian rhythms are biological rhythms that occur within a 24-hour period but have a shorter duration than circadian rhythms. While circadian rhythms have a period of approximately 24 hours, ultradian rhythms have a period of less than 24 hours.
One example of an ultradian rhythm is the sleep cycle. During sleep, we go through different stages, including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. These stages repeat throughout the night in cycles of approximately 90 minutes. Each cycle consists of periods of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep.
Another example of an ultradian rhythm is the feeding cycle. Our bodies have natural patterns of hunger and satiety that occur throughout the day in cycles lasting a few hours. These cycles regulate our eating patterns and help maintain energy levels.
