While we celebrate the achievements and how far we have come, there is still so much to do, a few of the issues that the USA (and beyond) MUST change include:
Forced sterilization of Disabled people:
Many states say that doctors can sterilize a disabled person even when that person does not want it. These laws let judges, their family or guardians, make the decision for the disabled person. forced sterilization must stop.
Subminimum wage:
In 36 states, Disabled people can legally be paid less than minimum wage. Allowing employers to pay disabled people less for the same work, solely based on disability.
Marriage inequality:
If a Disabled person is receiving SSI, SSDI or Medicaid, their benefits can be reduced or revoked upon marriage.
Dehuminizing and unsafe air travel:
Disabled travellers and especially wheelchair users who are disproportionately impacted, face risking their safety when flying on planes. #RightsOnFlight
Inaccessible employment:
Disabled people are twice more likely to be unemployed than non-disabled people. We must remove barriers, including attitudinal ones, that prevent employment and career advancement.
A significant absence of media representation:
Of the 4.2% of Disabled people represented in film & TV it is estimated 95% of those roles are portrayed by non-disabled talent. And in advertising the stat stands at 0.9% and even worse behind the camera.
Lack anti-discrimination policies from the 193 members states of the United Nations:
Studies on disability legislation shows that only 45 countries have anti-discrimination and other disability-specific laws.
Incredible advocates have been working to change these infuriating facts for decades, and there is progress but as Biden said last night:
“we’re gonna have to defend the work we’ve done and quite frankly defend democracy”.
