Caption : Recently in Rome we stood with @franciscus and prayed for peace in our world. As each day brings more news of terrible violence in the Holy Land, I join with him in inviting Christians to take part in tomorrow’s day of fasting and prayer. Let us beat on the doors of heaven and pray for peace in our time, peace in our world.

Caption : The war in Israel and Gaza cannot be allowed to sow antisemitism, hatred and prejudice in the UK. This morning at Lambeth Palace I was joined by Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra and Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg to call for solidarity in our communities. Sheikh Ibrahim and Rabbi Wittenberg spoke for their own communities and networks, of their deep pain for what is happening in Israel and Gaza and the sharp rise in antisemitism in the UK, but also of the comfort they have found in friendship forged across religious difference. I pray that we remain united against all forms of discrimination. Read more at the link in bio.

Caption : The people of Armenia are not forgotten – not by God, and not by the Church. Today I began a two-day visit here, having been to Azerbaijan and Georgia earlier this week. I have long been praying for the people of Armenia – the first Christian kingdom. They were the first region to have the cross as their symbol; a symbol of struggle and pain. I’m so grateful for this chance to remind them that in their current struggle, our Armenian sisters and brothers are not forgotten by us, nor by God. Neither are the 120,000 refugees who have fled the Nagorno-Karabakh region – some of whom I will be meeting tomorrow. They remain in my prayers and the prayers of @thechurchofengland. In Azerbaijan on Monday, I met with political leaders and pleaded with them to break the cycle of violence, and protect the religious and cultural heritage of Armenian Karabakhs. And at the remarkable Peace Cathedral in Georgia on Tuesday, we prayed together for peace and reconciliation around the world. Together we asked God to refresh our love for non-violence, to refresh our love for our neighbours. May peacebuilding across borders of all kinds continue to be our hearts’ cry. The devastating loss of innocent Palestinian life and humanitarian catastrophe resulting from Israel’s bombardment and siege of Gaza cannot be morally justified. The evil of Hamas cannot be paid by the civilians of Gaza. The bloodshed must cease, hostages must be released, and aid must reach those in dire need. In Christ’s name, we cry from our hearts: “No more. This killing must stop.” Read my joint Presidential Address to @churchofengland General Synod yesterday – link in bio

These are challenging times for faith communities in the UK, particularly with the devastating war in the Middle East. The King’s visit was a wonderful encouragement to remain united in partnership and friendship – as many people of faith are doing across the country. Jesus calls us to be peacemakers, and that is especially important right now. I hope this visit by the King inspires @thechurchofengland to continue in our calling to love our neighbours and help bring communities together. Read more at the link in bio.

It was an honour to meet him in his quest for peace in his beloved South Sudan, both among leaders and the people, at the national and community level. Bishop Paride’s unique Peace Village provided a venue for rival groups to work close-up at their differences and solve many of them. It was my honour in 2017 to present him the Hubert Walter Award for his peacebuilding efforts and the promotion of the education of boys and girls. I pray for Bishop Paride’s family, all who loved him, and for the people of South Sudan who he served in Christ’s name. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

It was presented at Lambeth Palace by @saintjohnsabbey and University in Minnesota, USA, and is the first handwritten, illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in 500 years. It will be housed for public view at @lampallib. It was good to meet those who have dedicated over 11 years to creating this Bible – using ancient practices to bring a fresh expression of God’s word into the 21st century, with the ultimate hope of reigniting faith in God and love for the Bible around the world. I pray their work will bear much fruit – and that by so diligently revealing the beauty of Scripture, many will come to faith in Christ.

Caption : We often wish people a ‘Happy Christmas!’ But joy is not quite the same as happiness. Happiness tends to be our response to something good happening. It’s often fleeting. Sometimes our pursuit of it causes us more pain than happiness. And when it’s gone, we can feel flat and bereft. Joy, however, is an inner feeling. The Dutch Catholic priest Henri Nouwen said that: ‘Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing — sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death — can take that love away.’ When we look around the world, there is much that makes us unhappy. And with God by our side, we can truly face the suffering and pain so many are experiencing – perhaps we ourselves are going through. But as we lift our heads to Christmas, when God takes flesh and comes among us, and enters into a new way of relating with us, we might realise something else. Joy at Christmas is about being with others, about joining with them in whatever they are going through, even their suffering, walking with them in their pain, and sharing in their good times. Joy is about loving and being loved. As we approach Christmas, we remember that God loves us so much that he came to be with us. He teaches us how to love each other. And so we have hope — hope that nothing on this Earth can take away from us, for it is given by God.

Caption : Grateful to have spent a fantastic day in @hereforddiocese at the weekend, talking all about prayer to mark the end of the Diocese’s Year of Prayer. We engaged together in prayer, through contemplation, art, on the streets of Hereford and in the 24-hour prayer space. Prayer is foundational to our relationship with God and there are many rich and fulfilling ways in which to pray. During the day, as I joined the weekly service of Prayers for Peace at @hfdcathedral, we heard a beautiful Poem for Peace from Sasha, a Ukrainian student. Prayer means coming to God and saying, ‘I can’t do it alone. I’m completely dependent on you, even for my next breath.’ That dependence on God takes us into his presence. To be a Christian means to be caught up in the love of God. Photos 1, 2, 3 and 5 credit: Lewis Markey

Caption : On Armistice Day in the Diocese of Exeter, a poignant morning prayer service at St Mary-the-Virgin, Torquay. The space is dedicated to lives lost to bombing in the St Marychurch area in 1943. I then joined in an Act of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Torquay. We prayed for healing from past conflict, for bridges across divides, and for peace in the future. This afternoon at the University of Exeter, I spoke with four incredible people who support the bereaved. The Good Grief Project stayed with me – it helps people to view grief as an active and creative process.

Caption : At this time of extreme crisis in the Holy Land, Archbishop Hosam Naoum and I are calling for your prayers and support for the Anglican Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza. Despite the devastating explosion last week, they continue to care for those in urgent need. Please also pray for the Christian ministries working in the Holy Land, helping those affected by the conflict both practically and spiritually. May they be strengthened and allowed the freedom to continue their important work, unimpeded by violence and catastrophe. St Paul teaches us that when one member of the Body of Christ suffers, all parts suffer with it. If you are able, please contribute to our Gaza Appeal. And please join your prayers with ours for the Church in the Holy Land. Link in bio.

Caption : Last week in Armenia I met with refugees who have fled Nagorno-Karabakh. It was a privilege to meet them, to pray together, and to remind them they are not forgotten. They are just a fraction of more than 100,000 people who have fled Nagorno-Karabakh in recent weeks, and their stories pierced my heart. Yet each one of their lives and stories are important to me, important to many around the world, and important to God. Please continue to pray for them – and all those around the world who have been forced to leave their homes and communities in the face of conflict.

It can be easy to be so aware of what we lack that we either hope too much or too little. Today I pray for those who are waiting for life-changing things, that God may bring peace and comfort in the not-yet of waiting.

Caption : God makes his promises in the darkness. He promises Moses that his people who are enslaved in Egypt will be set free. He promises Mary, a poor young girl living under Empire, that she will bear the Messiah. God’s promises are made in the shadow of war, conflict, oppression, persecution and uncertainty. As we look around today, we see so much suffering — the Holy Land, Ukraine, and so many other parts of the world are beset by darkness and injustice. And of course, we know suffering here in this country, where so many people are lonely, destitute, homeless and struggling. Facing our difficulties truly we might wonder how we can bear waiting in this Advent season of darkness, how we can sit with all the pain of the world. I hold fast to God’s faithfulness. I remember that God’s promises are made to the oppressed, the excluded, the humiliated. This hope is held out for us: that even in the absolute mess of the world, God is already at work, already at the side of the broken and the forgotten, as he always has been and always will be. And so with that hope, in Advent we wait. We wait for God’s certain promises to come to fruition. We listen for the new promises he is making to us. We wait for the peace and justice held for us by Jesus Christ. We wait, we watch, and we pray that the Christ-child who came that we might be redeemed will come again, and restore us to His Kingdom. Amen.

In the midst of the business of the world at Christmas, I pray that wherever we are, whatever we face, we would know that the gift of Christmas is Immanuel, God-with-us, in every corner of the world, and in the shape of our joys and sorrows, of our hopes and fears. God comes softly, and meets us with love.

Today I pray that we would be able to see the signs of God at work even where God appears far away, know how to join in as God calls us to work with him so that his kingdom would come, and trust that he holds all things, beyond what we can imagine.

Caption : We often talk of Christmas as a time of hope fulfilled. In the birth of Christ, as the famous carol goes, ‘the hope and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.’ But Advent is the time before that hope is fulfilled – the time when our hopes have not yet been answered, and yet we are challenged to continue hoping. During the talks on Northern Ireland at the time of the Troubles, a British Minister involved was asked, ‘Minister, are you optimistic?’ ‘No,’ he replied, ‘but I am hopeful.’ Vaclav Havel, the former President of then Czechoslovakia, said, ‘Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.’ Hope is the quiet certainty that, in Christ, all things will, one day, be made right, even if we don’t know how yet. Optimism depends on ourselves. It looks inwards. It believes that we can fix things. But when things don’t turn out exactly how we want, it can lead to despair. Hope looks to God alone. In him, all our hopes will be fulfilled.

Caption : Today is the first Sunday of Advent. It marks the beginning of a season of waiting, a dark season of longing for the lights and warmth of Christmas. We find waiting very difficult. Waiting confronts the illusion that we are in control. It’s very easy to believe this in our modern world, where technology provides us with any information we can dream of instantly, where our infrastructure and modern medicine insulates us from our precariousness and fragility. Waiting reminds us of our powerlessness in our lives in so many ways. We recognise our inability to predict the future, to know the outcome of situations we long to see resolved. To realise we are not in control of our lives can feel hugely shocking and destabilising. And yet at Advent, we reflect on the fact that the one we are waiting for is the one who we can ask to be in control of our lives. This one does not come with power and fire. He will come, as Rowan Williams writes in his marvellous poem ‘Advent Calendar’, ‘like crying in the night, like blood, like breaking, as the earth writhes to toss him free. He will come like a child.’ I pray that this Advent, you may release all that you are waiting for into the arms of the babe in the manger. In His presence, may our waiting finally cease.

This weekend I’m visiting @CofEPortsmouth to join in with sharing the love of God – starting today on the Isle of Wight. It was good to meet so many teachers and students at Christ the King College this morning. The secondary school is a joint Church of England and Catholic venture, and it’s heartwarming to see children taught in an ecumenical space from the age of eleven, when they’re beginning to think about how they can make their mark on the world. I pray that these pupils grow to become agents of reconciliation across all kinds of borders in their local community and beyond. @thebayceschool is also doing great work in inspiring and educating children from the age of 4 all the way to 18. The school choir is hugely talented, and I was honoured to bless their school and speak to staff. I was asked brilliant questions by primary and secondary students – already probing deep questions of faith, scripture and the witness of the church. Honesty is so healthy for us all as we grow in relationship with God. This evening I visited Holy Trinity Bembridge, where we shared together about following Jesus through times of joy and sorrow. It was good to sing together, pray together and encourage one another. A full day, but one full of inspiration and hope for current and future generations on the Isle of Wight.
