Being back in #sanfrancisco and remembering way back when the whole conversation with my parents began about how honestly insane an idea it was that I could ever actually be an #actor brings up a lot of feelings and perspective. My parents had this conversation with me, laced with A Parent’s Fear, a concern I now comprehend with the passing of time. And here we are today, in front of the theater I used to come to on field trips with my high school drama class, where today inside there’s a dressing room with all my stuff in it for the next couple of weeks, and here’s my mom. Pointing to the ultimate result of that awkward conversation. Happy Birthday, Mom, and thanks for all of it. @actsanfrancisco #tonirembetheater #BigData runs TWO MORE WEEKS and is well worth every penny of the ticket price. And It’s not just the crazy great reviews or the beautiful physical production or even that I’m in it: it’s just simply a Great New Play.

I’ve had incredible luck this year with World Premieres of New Plays. I’ve been invited to work on not one but two funny, moving new works that, in completely different ways, explore the human experience with humor and insight and powerful emotion. We start rehearsal very soon for the latest, #ShayanLotfi’s #WhatBecameOfUs, at one of my favorite companies, @atlantictheater in #NewYork, and I’m chompin at the B to dig into this rich rich play, directed by #JenniferChang @iamtherealchanginator. On top of these blessings, #atlantictheatercompany managed to also book my longtime pal #RosalindChao @chao_time, and our reunion, as in the play itself, is charged with love and a shared history that you just can’t fake. Lotfi’s play is full of wonderful language and such a dynamic, “unspecific specificity” that two different casts can (and will) interpret this moving relationship, while coming literally from very different places on this earth. You could even see the sublime #TonyShaloub and #ShohrehAghdashloo @saghdashloo on the same day as Ros and me if you book your tickets right! We had a wonderful closing performance day/night for the World Premiere Production of #BigData by #KateAttwell @kadatt directed by @pammac900 at @actsanfrancisco. We were all in different corners of the theater at Places call, so we did things differently and had our “energy circle” *after* the bows, which was really really nice. I love and respect all of these talented actors and can’t wait to see or work with them again soon as possible. Happy Trails, #BigData fam.
The World Theater Day Thing. #robertmorancooper @wongbd and #donaldericnelson in CHARLEY’S AUNT. Abraham Lincoln High School, San Francisco, CA, Fall 1977. Our drama teacher and mentor #ZoraChanes was obsessed with the @actsanfrancisco production of this very old farce starring #reneauberjonois and stole all the funny physical bits; Bob and Eric and I ate it up. This was a real moment in my understanding of who I am; could be. My mom had made me the white suit that I also wore earlier that year as Harold Hill in THE MUSIC MAN. Good times. PS Flash Forward 37 years later (2014) I headlined my first production at @actsanfrancisco; we just closed my third.
