Happy Birthday to the funniest man on Earth* @friedgold. Love him, miss him. A great actor, a great writer, and a great cook! *Don’t tell @simonpegg I said that.
On the 29th of March 2004, it was the UK premiere in Leicester Square of ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ at the Warner West End. The actual 20th anniversary release date is in a few weeks time, but this unveiling was a magical night for so many reasons: my first ever premiere, the first major screening of the finished film, a genuinely great after-party (they aren’t always), and a gathering of nearest and dearest there to support our little zombie movie that could. It was also the night when the seed was sown for future ice-cream-centric films. On the way out of the premiere party at the (no longer there) Atlantic Bar, we were given free Strawberry Cornettos. I was so bowled over by the gift of free ice cream that we later resolved to put Cornettos into ‘Hot Fuzz’ as a ruse to get more*. I’ll have more to say on how this film changed my life when it’s the anniversary proper, and maybe there will be some news 👀, but for now… LOOK AT HOW YOUNG WE ALL ARE XX (*We didn’t get free ice cream at the Hot Fuzz premiere. What a rip-off!) #shaunofthedead

As we near the end of the 2023/2024 awards cycle, you will have already heard about several excellent films that are nominated, or have already won some hardware. But that’s never the full story of the cinematic year. With that in mind, here’s 40 or so movies I saw in the last year that I enjoyed, was impressed by, or I think are of note, that were NOT nominated for either a BAFTA or an Oscar. Let me know if you saw and loved any of these too… * AIR * ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET * ASTEROID CITY * BEAU IS AFRAID * BLACKBERRY * BOTTOMS * CITY OF WIND * CONCRETE UTOPIA * DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD * DREAM SCENARIO * EILEEN * ENYS MEN * ESCURSION * FAIR PLAY * FALLEN LEAVES * GODLAND * HAVE YOU GOT IT YET? * HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE * INFINITY POOL * JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4 * THE KILLER * LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING * LYNCH / OZ * MAD ABOUT THE BOY: THE NOËL COWARD STORY * THE MOTHER OF ALL LIES * MEMORY * ORIGIN * PASSAGES * POLITE SOCIETY * PRISCILLA * THE PROMISED LAND * REALITY * THE ROYAL HOTEL * SCALA!!! * SISU * SQUARING THE CIRCLE: THE STORY OF HIPGNOSISLA * LA SYNDICALISTE * TALK TO ME * THE TASTE OF THINGS * THEATER CAMP * TOGETHER 99 * TOTEM And if you had a favourite from the last year that didn’t get nominated for anything, let me know. (NB: To @realeliroth, you know I loved ’Thanksgiving’ but I have not included it due to ‘Grindhouse-alumni-bias’.)

Rose Glass second feature ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ is a welcome shot in the arm for indie cinema; funny, ferocious & wildly imaginative. A certain moment in the last 15 mins had me applauding its audacity. The whole cast is great, but Katy O’Brian just flat out rocks in a gargantuan star turn. Bravo. Go see it!

Happy 30th birthday to @thetoucansoho! The perfect desination for your first (or last) night in Soho. Sink a pint of numbers in the basement bar for me today. Photo 1&2 by @gregwilliamsphotography. Photo 4 by @phillordy.

Had such a fun night this week at the debut screening of ‘Madhouse’ at the beautiful @cinemainthepowerstation. Am very proud of star, co-writer and co-producer @juliabender for all her amazing work on this short, along with her partners in crime, co-writer, director @danielchristophersen and co-producer @farawayfilmsuk (Oscar Albert). Happy to have helped play a little part in getting this to the screen. Was so great to see everyone who worked on it or helped out to make it a reality. More please! @farawayfilmsuk @cornichemedia @fyraslaiman 📸: @jonfraserdop Teaser in bio!
