Carol Vorderman Instagram – LBC SHOW On my show we talked about lots of things including After the utter chaos of the Tories this week, was the last politician you felt was working for you and not for themselves? Overwhelmingly the answer kept coming back to GORDON BROWN…..including all he did to introduce Sure Start and lots to give children opportunities. The global financial crisis wrecked it for him and in 2010 we had a Conservative Lib Dem coalition with David Cameron as Prime Minister and Nick Clegg as his deputy. They introduced the austerity years and we all are living through the results of that. Other subjects were the SEZs….Special Economic Zones which nobody in media seems to be talking about BUT they are my biggest fear and will be the legacy of the Tories. There are 74 SEZs and 12 Freeports already in existence. What are they? They are effectively little states within this country. Some of them are as big as Dartmoor down to Plymouth Within them they can set their own tax system, their own employment laws (or lack of them) and compulsory purchase land or buildings at their own will. They are terrifying. So I spoke to David Powell about them as an introduction to the subject. Remember the day you first heard about them. I believe they are what Brexit was really all about. The lies about stopping immigration were just a ruse to get dog whistle votes from people who didn’t know better. We also talked about Frank Hester who has donated £10 million to the Tory party. His company has received over £400 million in government contracts since 2015. He is reported to have made disgusting racist comments about Labour MP Diane Abbott. The Tories won’t hand back the money and seem happy to accept another £5 million from him in the coming months for their election game. Tune in every Sunday 4-7pm @lbc ❤️❤️👍🏼
Carol Vorderman Instagram – ANSWERING YOUR POLITICAL QUESTIONS PART 2 Is there any way we can lower taxes and still have decent public services? The Tories have effectively privatised all the things I grew up with which were nationalised back then so profits went back to the govt. Their final hurrah is to effectively privatise the NHS so that money going into the NHS becomes profit for a lot of their Tory party donors’ companies. Take that profit away and everything will cost less and hopefully run better. Decades ago we were sold the lie that everything going through a private company will be more efficient and cheaper than if it was run publicly. We’ve learned (water gas electricity… everything) otherwise haven’t we? Do you think Michael Gove’s failure to notify financial interests is a breach? Yes I do. He received tickets for a football game from David Meller and didn’t declare them which in itself sounds like nothing. But then when you hear that David Meller (a tory donor and sponsor of Gove for leader) had a company called Meller Designs, a fashion company with no experience of PPE which then received VIP Lane contracts of £160 million during Covid after being referred by Michael Gove, then the penny starts to drop about conflicts of interest? Do you think they are more corrupt today than years ago, or just not as smart in hiding it? I believe that the system has never been more corrupt than since the Brexit vote. Corruption wasn’t something which was even thought about when I was young and most of our infrastructure was owned by us, it was nationalised. Nearly everything was nationalised. So there wasn’t room for private profiteering off govt contracts. I’m not saying nothing bad happened as I don’t know but since Brexit it has escalated to a situation I don’t recognise anymore. It’s breathtaking. Donate to the Tories and you get a place in the House of Lords anyone?
