Kate Bryan Instagram – This International Women’s Day, I’ve teamed up with @theartofldn to honour women artists past and present in London’s West End. 🎨
Ever the art addict, I took myself off on a cultural journey spotlighting some of my favourite women artists, you can follow my full guide on @theartofldn website.
Starting at @royalacademyarts, the Angelica Kauffman exhibition (ticketed) is a long- awaited exploration of this founding member of the RA who rose to great prominence as one of Europe’s most celebrated artists. From a star of the 18th Century to a giant of today’s contemporary landscape, I also loved seeing the free display focussing on Lubaina Himid’s works on paper in the Collection Gallery. Himid has dedicated her 30-year-long career to uncovering marginalised and silenced histories as well as being an educator and a great champion for women artists.
A quick coffee turned into a long one so I could take in Cornelia Parker’s installation in the Royal Academy’s ‘Keeper’s House’ for their members. A home for art lovers for over 150 years, and a hidden treasure.
On to the @nationalgallery where masterpieces by Artemisia Gentileschi and Vigée Le Brun demonstrate women artists have been an integral part of art history for hundreds of years.
Finally, a chance to bathe in dozens of ground-breaking women artists in one display @nationalportraitgallery with the CHANEL culture fund display, Reframing Narratives: Women in Portraiture. I loved seeing Issy Wood and Sarah Lucas happily ensconced amongst historic names like Maeve Gilmore.
I finally sat down to take it all in the @nationalportraitgallery new hotspot, Larry’s @daisygreencollection. Simply put, it’s divine.
It’s vital to not just be asking where women artists are, but demanding to see them, and it feels like every year London gets better and better and answering this call.
Here’s to elevating women’s voices and talents in every form.
