When I needed to find a new pathway outside of the studio system to make my latest film ORIGIN, I thought of an old question that I’d long wondered about. Would those non-profits that I saw at the end of PBS documentaries ever consider making a narrative film with actors – if it was about a topic that aligned with their mission?
I called the one man who would have the answer – and in a turn of events that would change everything – he said yes. That man is Darren Walker of the Ford Foundation. He gave me and ARRAY Alliance’s Executive Director Regina Miller the courage to ask our long-time supporters Laurene Powell Jobs of Emerson Collective and Melinda Gates of Pivotal Ventures. These dynamic women leaders also said yes. Then, more like-minded partners came on board, like Anne Wojcicki, Kimberly Steward, Agnes Gund, Chris and Jada Paul, among many others.
You never know when people will say yes. So in the meantime, prepare the soil. Be ready when the time comes for the seeds you’ve planted to blossom. ORIGIN is the flower from a seed planted with the love and resources of many people. My heartfelt thanks to every foundation and individual who lent their sunlight to this work.
Thank you to Geoff Edgers for writing this story of our journey together. The link to his beautiful article is in my bio. xo

@michelleobama, Amal Clooney (@clooneyfoundationforjustice), and I share the belief that every girl deserves the chance to live the life she envisions for herself. That’s why we’ve joined forces to help end child marriage.
We recently traveled to Malawi and South Africa to learn from some of the people who are working to end this harmful practice. Their efforts are proving that progress is possible—and that everyone benefits when girls are free to shape their own futures.
Thank you to everyone who made this trip one to remember.
@jenngatesnassar and I may not be the most artistic, but we make up for it with our holiday cheer 😉🎄
Had so much fun talking about some of our favorite holiday traditions, and of course my greatest joy of 2023: my sweet granddaughter, Leila.
Happy #SpotifyWrapped Day. (What, like you never had a Walkman? 😎)
“We know that anything short of the right to decide what happens to our bodies, families, and futures is an assault on our freedoms.” — @phoebegates
Having a proud mom moment seeing Phoebe Gates speak out about the importance of reproductive rights. Earlier this year, I asked her why she’s so passionate about this issue. I loved her answer ❤️ https://www.teenvogue.com/story/young-people-cant-be-fooled-out-of-reproductive-freedom
As a new grandmother and mother of three, I was really moved by the #DesigningMotherhood exhibition at @DiscoverGates. But trust me, you don’t have to be either of those to find it worth your time.
The exhibition shines a much-needed light on innovations in family planning, what it’s like to give birth, and how to save the lives of moms and their babies—and how to create more equitable experiences around the world.
But it closes on December 30th, so make sure you don’t miss out!

Child marriage is a global issue that affects millions of girls every year, robbing them of their chance at an education, threatening their health and safety, and locking them into a cycle of poverty. And at the current rate of progress, it will be 300 years before child marriage is eradicated.
But change is possible in our lifetime. And @michelleobama, Amal Clooney, and I are committed to making that change happen—and we hope you join us by getting involved with our partners @girlsopportunityalliance, @clooneyfoundationforjustice, Girls First Fund, and @girlsnotbrides_.
When my sister and I were little, we’d spend hours lying under our Christmas tree looking up at all the twinkling lights and talking about how excited we were for the holiday season.
All these years later, I love to find ways to re-create that holiday magic I felt as a little girl ✨
What makes the holidays special to you?
I often think about the motto of my high school, Ursuline Academy: Serviam, or “I will serve.”
I learned a lot there about the importance of giving back—and that giving back looks different for everyone. Whether you use your voice, your time, your expertise, or your resources, your efforts can make a difference in someone’s life. How are you giving back this #GivingTuesday?
For generations, @girlscouts has helped girls find their voices, give back to their communities, and develop lifelong friendships. I love thinking about the ways it’ll continue to inspire girls—and all young people—to shape the future they want to see.
Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout 😊 (That’s me on the right and my mom looking fabulous on the left.) #NationalGirlScoutsDay
If I could sum up my recent trip to Malawi and South Africa with @michelleobama and Amal Clooney (@clooneyfoundationforjustice) in one word, it would be “hopeful.” Here’s why.
This year was filled with so many incredible reads—here are a few of my favorites 📚 What books did you love in 2023?
Seattle is a city full of amazing small businesses—including @thepastryproject_. I loved learning about The Pastry Project’s mission from one of their co-founders Emily, who also taught me some great tips for decorating cookies! 🍪
What organizations are you supporting this holiday season?
Happy Pi(e) Day! The amazing Seattle baker @lokokitchen designed this gender equality pie for @pivotal_ventures, and I can’t get over how beautiful (and delicious) it looks. #piday
